60% would rather die than exercise

Six out of 10 Britons would not be motivated to do more exercise even if their lives depended on it, a poll has found. This is despite one person dying every 15 minutes as a result of physical inactivity, according to British Heart Foundation figures.

How did we become a society like this? I am pretty sure its close to that number in America as well.

Which begs the question. In the face of some of the proposals (most of which are unConstitutional) where your required to have insurance and required to get checkups, how are we going to do anything if people don't want to help themselves? Mandate exercise? This from a government which still allows cigarettes to be sold?

If I look around my office I bet I can find more than 60%

I could easily find more than 60% where I work. With modern medicine ... these people will live longer than ever. Throw a defibrulator on their heart and pump in some cholesterol and diabetes medicine and they are good to go.

Really... all you even need to do is walk a little every day and get the heart rate up. Its not like you have to run a marathon.

I would add one more stat to that. 50% or more of that 60% are smokers.

Studies are showing that for every hour you exercise, you will on average add 1-2 hours of boring old age to your life. But, for every hour you exercise, you waste 1-2 hours of precious youth exercising, showering, travelling to the gym, etc.

Basically, you are trading your youth life for elderly life. The amount of spare time you have doesn't change. Adding useful time to your life is a myth.

I perfer my youth life by far.

Note: I exercise to improve my looks. That makes my youth life far better than if I didn't exercise at all. I could not care less if it added any time at all to my life.

Beat me to it! I love the stuff I do, wouldn't really call it exercise, just a bi-product of getting some serious stoke. MTBing, surfing, martial arts, disc golf, roundball, running, ect. all give me major stoke, though the couple days a week I'm hitting the weights, can sometimes be a chore. I probably just need to get a partner for that to be a good time.

Although arguably, maintaining a high level of fitness will also enable you to better enjoy life, even in your youth.

I let myself slip during grad school, and noticed a definite shift in terms of my mental agility, energy levels and motivation to do things outside of work...now that I am back on a disciplined workout routine, I am back to my old self, to include having a much healthier work life balance.

I've seen your pic, you can't do enough exercising to make a significant difference so you best settle for improving your health.;)

Getting old is bad enough, no need to be fat and old.

haha, but this is obvious. I figured many just didn't put two and two together about their indolence and life. I know that theoretically many do prefer to die rather than exercise, but when really posed with the question to admit is a shame. Theys hould be minced and fed to farm animals.

Most people I know do little or any activity, though. I do a great deal of it.

Heh.. I'm one of those who would rather exercise and live. I go to the gym 3-5 times per week.

Yes, I would rather live life healthy and not sounding like Darth Vader after walking to the bathroom. I find that I have more endurance to handle all the things that life throws at me when I am in shape. I swim a mile during my lunch and then run 3-5 miles before eating dinner after I get home from work. (and around every 10 days I play in a ice hockey game.) I notice also that my sex drive has gone way up and that I can last longer. If that alone is not incentive enough!!! I also look better and have a more positive attitude. These things are all interrelated, but some people just chose to ignore it. I am also enforcing a healthy lifestyle choice to my children. (All but one due to age, is a runner of some kind.)

Live long and prosper.

Wow! I guess I just need to exercise more to get rid of my chronic sinus infections and chronic stomach problems that even the top doctors of mount sinai hospital in nyc can't figure out!

Oh wait, I'm not overweight and do exercise..

Charge people more if they are overwieght.. but this doesn't affect a ton of medical problems.
When my wife is on leave for giving birth within the next month, the insurance will go up to $1100 a month from $100 currently until she goes back to work.. I guess we should have our baby exercise more! That'll help!

Well are you going to be one of those 50 year olds wearing the diabetic shoes and breathing loud because you are winded from walking from your desk to the elevator.?

Its not about adding time... its about being healthy and not in constant bitch mode about your latest trip to the doctor.

I feel better when I get exercise. That alone makes it worth the time and money spent. The next benefit I might hope for as a result would not be simply to live longer, but to feel better later when those who don't help themselves have heart disease and...

I like it as well, plus it leaves me pumped for quite a bit of time afterward.

Besides, fatties are missing out on a major benefit, exercising raises your metabolism which means you burn more calories which means you can eat more! :p
