PALMER, Mass. (WGGB) — A plastic Lego sized gun caused a disturbance on a Old Mill Pond Elementary School bus Friday morning.

Mieke Crane is the mother of the six-year-old kindergarten student who brought the gun on the bus.

“I think they over-reacted totally. I totally do,” said Crane.

Another student on the bus saw the toy and yelled to the driver.

“She said he caused quite a disturbance on the bus and that the children were traumatized,” said Crane.

The school sent home a letter to parents of students who take the bus explaining what happened. It stressed no gun was on the bus and there was never any danger.

The letter also has photo of the toy showing it’s actual size, which is slightly larger than a quarter.

PALMER, Mass. (WGGB) – A kindergarten student that was supposed to get detention for bringing a Lego sized gun onto a school bus Friday morning is no longer being disciplined by the school for the incident.

Mieke Crane, the boy’s mother, says he was worrying about his detention all weekend, but is relieved it’s not happening.

“He smiled when we told him, he was very excited when we told him he didn’t have to serve the detention,” said Crane.

On May 24, the six-year-old had a quarter-sized Lego toy gun on the bus. Another student supposedly yelled out after seeing the toy.

Crane, who met with the school’s principal Tuesday, says things changed once the bus surveillance video was viewed.

“She [the principal] looked at the tape, the children were not standing up hollering, nobody was ducking, no one was screaming he has a gun. The little boy raised his hand properly the first time,” said Crane.



ohh i see they over reacted before they had ANY FUCKING PROOF. once they looked at the video they seen nobody screamed, nobody freaked out.

The good thing about people/places/societies that have ridiculous overreaching fears on things that are just silly is that you have a point of leverage over them and the people they fall under by seemingly confirming/validating said fears by making it appear as though said harbored fears have been realized. If the kid who brought the toy was one of my enemies, I absolutely would have cried out and sworn up and down about how much it had "traumatized" me for life. Administrators are just stupid enough to buy it and be manipulated.

This is 99% likely to be what happened. The rest of the people flipping out just don't want to be fired. You will never be fired for over reacting but you can easily be fired for doing nothing.

And how much did it cost to write this letter, make copies, hand it out? My parents didn't get a letter every time someone farted or made a silly face.
This is why schools will forever be "needing" money. They keep wasting money on dumb shit like this then say we need to raise taxes to buy new textbooks. We all know they won't buy new textbooks. They'll use that tax money to send out more letters about which students have which toys. Today they got a letter saying a kid has a toy that came with a little gun the size of a quarter. Next they'll get a letter saying Billy owns a new wrist watch, but it will be printed on higher quality paper with colored text (which is significantly more expensive than b&w printing).

The long term strategy is to abolish anything and everything that can do harm to someone.

If my kids were caught doing half the stuff I did when I was a kid, I probably would be thrown in jail. But when I was a kid it was common practice.

When I was in high school (1982 - 1986) I have no idea how many times I brought a gun to school in my truck. My buddies and I go hunting on the weekends, then forget to take the gun out from behind the backseat for a couple of weeks.

My mossberg 500 pump shotgun has scratch marks all over the stock where it stayed behind the seat of my truck for weeks at a time.

Pocket knives were common in school. Just about all of the guys I went to school with, including myself carried a pocket knife. How else are you supposed to do touchup work in woodshop? Teacher see a kid with a knife, all they would say is put it away, or it might get taken up.

actually if you read the full article the girl had to apologize too for it for some reason (yes this is before they looked at the film)

The other student, who yelled about seeing the gun, also had to apologize.

I did read it the news stories. I am wondering why you chose to intentionally cut out these parts because the tone of the entire story changes when you do. Did the school mess up yeah. I give them a C- on how they handled it but it is hardly newsworthy after they reversed themselves. The bus driver should be disciplined for lying but the story does not address any of that.

“I could see if it was you know, an air soft gun or some sort of pistol or live bullets or something. This is just a toy,” said Crane.

She is upset with how her son is being disciplined. She says he had to write an apology letter to the driver, has detention on Tuesday and could be temporarily suspended from the bus.

The other student, who yelled about seeing the gun, also had to apologize.

Crane and that student’s mother, who did not go on camera, think this is sending the wrong message. The two agree speaking up is what the students are trained to do if they see something wrong like a gun.

Meantime, Crane says her son knows guns are bad and that they shouldn’t be in school.

“At six-years-old. I don’t really think he understood the zero tolerance policy and related it to this as the same,” said Crane.

We reached out to the Superintendent and Principal’s office by phone and email, but have not received a comment.

Originally, when the school learned about the incident Friday they had the six-year-old write an apology letter to the driver. They also gave him detention that was scheduled to be served Tuesday along with a bus ticket.

A letter explaining what happened was also sent home to the parents of the students on that specific bus.

Meantime, Crane still thinks the school over-reacted, but is happy her son can now get back to his school work.

“I am glad they looked into it. I am glad I spoke up and I am glad my kid is not in trouble anymore,” said Crane.

Neither the superintendent or the school’s principal would comment on Tuesday.

Palmer School Committee Chair Maureen Gallagher said: “There is no issue here. There’s going to be no disciplinary action taken. This is not a story and you can quote me.”

There is an issue here. A six year old was put through the ringer for something he couldn't understand as wrong (which is completely correct). Having to write a letter of apology? Everyone should be writing him and his family one. That he wasn't arrested or kicked out of school changes nothing. I take it you haven't kids because if you did and gave a rats behind you would have been livid or should have been.

I would be livid but I've read enough (probably dozens) stories where the child ends up having charges brought upon them for stupid things that this pales in comparison. I guess in my mind enough schools have set the bar pretty low enough now that this just doesn't even register.

How could he understand it was wrong, hell i don't even understand how that was wrong lol.

Like his mother said this wasn't an airsoft or any type of gun that could actually be mistaken as a real gun. That's like putting the kid through the ringer for bringing in one of those little green toy soldiers.

People need to get over this crap and start using some common sense. I'm not even talking about the other kid that yelled it. The bus driver could've easily by himself. Sorry kid, as stupid as it maybe you can't have that. Done deal right there.
