6 Speed automatic transmission to be co-developed by GM and uhhhh...Ford

Well how about that

I had a professor in school that always said "someday you'll be able to pick Chevy to make the body, Honda to make the engine, BMW to make the suspension and so on and so forth" in reference to his theory on the modularization of the automotive industry, similar to the standards of the computer industry. While this isn't quite that, it is interesting to see the possibility of some components to be shared amongst competing brands

actually that was a joke made by Jeremy Clarkson (BBC Top Gear).

Q: What would be your Ideal Car.

A. The car would be built by the germans, with the engine from the japanese, it would have its exterior crafted by the italians, the interior would be made by the british and the yanks would have no hand in it other than forking over the cash for it.

wow seems like GM and Ford are on the forefront of technology

Maybe not since BMW released the first 6-speed auto tranny last year and Jag and Audi have them now in their top of the line sedans.

But as far as bringing 6-speeds to the masses, sounds good to me. We probably won't see them for a while on GM/Ford cars though b/c not many of them even have 5-speed autos.
