Well...

I know that abs are a muscle group and doing exercises 2-3 times a week should get a 6 pack.

But... I've seen that 6 Minute Abs workout video and I'm pretty sure the guy said do that 6 minute ab thing EVERY DAY FOR 6 MINUTES.

What do you guys think? Has anyone actually done this 6 minute ab thing?

Ever heard the statement "you get what you pay for"... well in this case it's you get what you work for. You're not going to get well defined abs by doing a 6 minute work out... I do about 300 sit ups a night and 100 pushups.

Ok. I hope this was not sarcastic. I've heard that doing situps just messes your backup and doesn't really define your abs as much as crunches / leg exercises. But 300 of them? and 100 pushups?

... I do believe that's OVERWORKING

You could put a hat on and take it off for six minutes straight every single day if you'd rather. It doesn't matter. A "six pack" is all about bodyfat (or the lack thereof).

On the XC team, we do an ab routine known as "GutBusters" every day. Apparently Stsve Prefontaine did the exact routine everyday. We do 50 of several different kinds of ab exercises, crunches, side crunches, bicycles, leg lifts, etc. Someone asked if we should be doing them every day and our coaches said that with abs, it works better if you do them every day versus only a few times a week. Of course, we're just doing toning exercises, not trying to "bulk up." And, as Trygve said (wow, can't believe I typed that right), the true way to get a defined six pack is by reducing body fat.

Abs are a muscle group that need rest, just like any other part of the body. 2 times a week of crunches (eventually with weights) 30-45 minutes should be more than sufficient. You also need to eat healthy to expect a change. Genetics also play a role; not everyone can achieve a six pack.

Ok. Let me make this specific. Let's say that we're talking about getting abs for a guy who's in pretty decent condition with 5-8% body fat, 6 foot and nearly 140 lbs. ?

Thats kind of skinny.

I already came to the conclusion that I drink too much to get six pack abs, but I do excersise and work out alot. At over 6'1" and 165 lbs I aint doin too bad, just wish I was more tone.

I actually know one of the guys in the six minute abs commercial, Alex. We were coworkers when he was involved with it. During the time that he was involved with the infomercial he would meet with a trainer every day and eat only provided food....of course the six minute abs provided all this. He was also paid for his time and effort. So out of all of it he got a free trainer, diet food and got paid. I wish I could get in an informercial. The whole time he was training and up until a few weeks after he filmed the commercial he couldn't tell us what it was all about. But once his NDA was up he let it all spill. I still laugh when I see him in that commercial or on the box.

But within his workout he did use the contraption for six minutes. But I'm not sure if he also did other ab workouts. But when you have a trainer and special diet food I'm sure anyone could look good.

Um dude that's a little on the slender side; packing on the calories and adding some muscle wouldn't hurt. I'm 5'10" and about 155lbs. My BF is about 10-12% and I have only a little definition. Having six pack abs also depends on your muscle mass. You're going to have to do more than situps to get a good looking midsection. If you have a gym to take advantage of get on the decline slant board, hold a plate across your chest and do your situps that way. If you're really daring you'll hold the weight above you head and do the situps. Search online for oblique exercises as well.

You have to get down to around 8% body fat to have your six pack show. Doesnt matter how many crunches you do if you dont get down to 8% body fat. You also have to have the genetics. Not everyone can get a six pack, even if they work at it for a long time.

In order to get well defined abs you need muscle mass complemented by low bodyfat. And no, sit-ups aren't bad for your back. Working ONLY your abs and never working your back IS, however. When your abs are overdeveloped they put excessive strain on your back by tilting the pelvis backwards. On the flip side, overworking your lower back can cause your pelvis to tilt forward which also leads to back problems.

Anyway, back to the thread topic. I personally recommend doing weighted sit-up. It's generally accepted that any exercise that can be performed more than around 15 times primarily builds muscular endurance. This is why you end up seeing people that can do hundreds of sit-ups at a time but don't have well developed abs. However, if you do sit-ups while holding a weight that only permits you to do around 10 reps, you're more likely to induce hypertrophy (muscle growth) as well as increase strength.

Hitchhiker: You heard of this thing, the 8-Minute Abs?

Ted Stroehmann: Yeah, sure, 8-Minute Abs. Yeah, the excercise video.

Hitchhiker: Yeah, this is going to blow that right out of the water. Listen to this: 7... Minute... Abs.

Ted Stroehmann: Right. Yes. OK, alright. I see where you're going.

Hitchhiker: Think about it. You walk into a video store, you see 8-Minute Abs sittin' there, there's 7-Minute Abs right beside it. Which one are you gonna pick, man?

Ted Stroehmann: I would go for the 7.

Hitchhiker: Bingo, man, bingo. 7-Minute Abs. And we guarantee just as good a workout as the 8-minute folk.

Ted Stroehmann: You guarantee it? That's -- how do you do that?

Hitchhiker: If you're not happy with the first 7 minutes, we're gonna send you the extra minute free. You see? That's it. That's our motto. That's where we're comin' from. That's from "A" to "B".

Ted Stroehmann: That's right. That's -- that's good. That's good. Unless, of course, somebody comes up with 6-Minute Abs. Then you're in trouble, huh?

[Hitchhiker convulses]

Hitchhiker: No! No, no, not 6! I said 7. Nobody's comin' up with 6. Who works out in 6 minutes? You won't even get your heart goin, not even a mouse on a wheel.

Ted Stroehmann: That -- good point.

Hitchhiker: 7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 doors. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.

Ted Stroehmann: Why?

Hitchhiker: 'Cause you're fvckin' fired!

I do abs 4 times a week or every workout and do 200 reps and 10 sets with 4 different exercises
