Can i throw three video cards into a motherboard with three PCI Express slots and run six monitors off of that setup?

yep. as long as u got the slots, the cards and the power to power them with, I think XP/2k can handle up to 24 seperate monitors. who knows how many Vista can do.

As a security gig you could monitor 24 cameras simultaneously with that setup.

try looking at matrox as they have special solutions for multi monitor setups

would they have to be the same model? for example could I use two 7600gt cards and a 7900gt? i'm assuming that they would have to be at least in the same product line because of driver issues.

it may have been made a bit easier, but when i used to use 2 cards for multiple monitors, it was 'possible' to use different brands, but it could be very problematic and only certain combinations would work together. Regardless of if it's any easier today, you'll likely save yourself a lot of headaches and effort if they're all able to sue the same driver version, so 3 different Nvidia cards would be a good way to go if you're not going to use all the same.

BTW, as asked above, what exactly are you trying to accomplish with 6 screens?

i have six screens (a mixture of lcds and 2 crts) and three old 7 series video cards (2 7600gt 1 7900gt) not being used. i have a lot of crap sitting around. So i figured i could get a motherboard with 3 PCIe slots and set it up for shits and giggles.

That's as good a reason as any :) I can't imagine what i'd do with 6 screens. I have two at work and I've thought a 3rd wouldn't be bad at times, but not 6 :)

There are some semi-affordable cards out there with the DMS-59 hookup x2, for four DVI ports from a single PCI-E slot. So, you could run 4 screens from one slot, 8 screens from two slots, or 12 screens from 3.

Bad example above, as it's $400+, but it's still the only easy way to get tons of screens from a limited number of slots.
