I see Best Buy selling HP's with 6 gigabytes of memory and Vista 64 bit, makes wonder what the point of Windows 7 32 bit will be?
6gigabytes
6gigabytes

I'm more puzzled by the 6GB thing. Surely it would be easier for HP to just use 8GB (4x2GB) than 6GB (2x2GB + 2x1GB).
Well you're mixing and matching 2 different DIMMs. With an odd-power of memory, when a DIMM goes bad you (HP) suddenly has to determine of it's the 1GB or 2GB DIMM and replace it accordingly. 4 of the same part is going to be easier to deal with. It's entirely possible that you're right however and what they're doing is eating up their 1GB DIMM supply.Originally posted by: bunnyfubbles

why would it be easier? there's a good chance they're just using up supply...
also its a natural doubled upgrade from all the 3GB 32bit systems that exist (which does make more sense due to the obvious limitation) so that could be a possible explanation to the otherwise odd number

It's just marketing. People see one machine for $900 that has 2 GB but this machine for $1,050 has 6 GB. HP is paying something like $5/GB so what do they care? Load the thing up and mark the unit up $150.

Or they can by the same 2GB DIMM's in bulk so they just put 3 2GB DIMM's inside.

Yes. I have seen the insides of thousands of HP business class PCs. They don't care about paring memory or miss-matching speeds. They will put in what the customer orders or what they have in inventory.

Indeed. Anything to save a buck, so don't think they are going to optimize your RAM for you in any way.![]()

Still kind of surprising that machines at Best Buy are coming with 6 GB...or maybe that's what it really takes to run Vista well.
So I'm thinking when Windows 7 rolls out in 2010 the majority will buy a 64 bit edition.

Vista will run fine with 2 gigs of ram. I have 4 and have never used all of it. Even with 40 Firefox tabs open I've only used about 2.7 gigs.

The tab amount means nothing, you can have open all text pages with no flash, shockwave or moving ads. I can run about 20 -30 tabs and be burning up 1.5 GBs just to the browser itself.
Is 4GB really the limit for an OS, if so how come Server 03 32 bit, anything but the basic version, recognizes (and possibly uses) more than that. Or how Vista 32 can handle more?
But I've been running 64bit since XP 64 came out so I could care less.
