I was having trouble installing a gtx 680 in my alienware aurora r4 via pci e 3.0. the machine was shipped with the 660 and when I went to upgrade during the build they said I would have to cancel the order and start again. anyways, I had one 680 and sent it back due to the system not booting and the having 6 beeps.

I received a second card, evga gtx 680 FTW 4gb. put it in the machine and 6 beeps, no boot. my buddy came over who is very computer literate, which I am not. he put the 680 in and it didn't work. he put the 680 in his machine and it booted up properly. he took out the power supply on mine and put his power supply in my machine. still wouldn't work. put the 660 back in with his power supply and it worked.

He was at a loss for the time being and said he was going to do some research. I contacted alienware support and they said they would send someone out in like 5 days.

any ideas on what the problem is?

my system: I-7 3820 4.2 gh, 16 gb memory, gtx 660 ( currently), 875 watt psu, windows 8 64-bit

Motherboard may need a bios update, but that seems unlikely to me. You said his powersupply with a GTX 660 and your motherboard worked?

BIOS update was also my initial reaction - but just to confirm you're plugging in all required power cables into the video card, correct?

Also - try one of (all of) the other PCIe slots.

I am plugging in all the required power connectors. with the PCIe slots, why would one over the other make a difference? the slot that the 660 is in should work correct?

I am on the phone with dell and alienware the support. they said the motherboard is windows 8 certified or some bs and that the video card from dell is windows 8 certified. that the evga card is not which is why its not working, so he thinks.

can I switch motherboards if that's the case?

OP u said 6 beeps?
by any chance was it 3 beeps and then pause.. and then another 3 beeps?

3 beeps On-off (1.0 second each) three times, then 2.5-second pause (off).

Entire pattern repeats until the computer is powered off.

Memory error

Reseat the memory.
Make sure that the contacts on the memory and the socket are clean.
Try removing one bank of memory modules at a time. (Some systems can require a memory module in Bank 0.)
Try using memory modules from the same manufacturer with the same part number and speed.
Check for a faulty memory module by trying the memory in a known good system.

I've done some research because I was very curious and your problem doesn't appear to be isolated, given the number of posts on the web regarding add-in graphics cards not being recognized on many new factory computers; not just Dell either.

From what I've been reading; the problem with third-party add-in cards not being recognized seems to be that Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. are shipping their PCs, with Windows 8 pre-installed, in UEFI mode with secure boot enabled. It's the secure boot setting that prevents being able to install add-in cards (not just graphics cards).

Although the ability to disable secure boot is mandated by the Windows 8 certification requirements for x86 and x64 OEM computers, Dell in particular seems very remiss in including any documentation on just how to do that.

If Windows 8 came pre-installed on your computer, it almost certainly boots in UEFI mode. To get your computer to recognize your graphics card, you’ll need to switch the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy and then disable the Secure Boot option.

  1. Power on the computer and when the F2 Setup, F12 Boot Options appears in the lower-right corner of the screen, press F12.
  2. When the Boot Device Menu appears, use the arrow keys to choose the BIOS Setup option.
  3. In the BIOS Setup Utility, move to the Boot tab and disable the Secure Boot Control option.
  4. Next, navigate down to the Boot Mode option and switch the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy. Press F10 to save your changes.
  5. Once your computer restarts, press F12 to bring up the Boot Menu again and under 'OTHER OPTIONS' you should now see 'Peripheral Device Setting (OPROM Setting)'.
  6. Use the arrow keys to choose Peripheral Device Setting, then make the approptiate changes in BIOS to disable the onboard VGA and enable the PCIe graphics card. Press F10 to save your changes.
  7. Allow the computer to restart and test to confirm that your grapics card is now functional.
  8. Once satisfied, restart your computer then go back into the BIOS and switch the boot mode back to UEFI with secure boot enabled

when I turn my pc on with the 680 in it it does not even give me an option to press f12. screen stays blank and beeps.

do I use the original card first, then switch it after step 6?

Edited for clarification.

Yes, that's how I understood it. His was a bit different because he was running off internal graphics, I believe.

I bet that is the issue, follow those instructions, if that doesnt help, I suggest contact EVGA and ask them to walk you through installing a UEFI bios onto the GTX 680

i got the new dell micro for my mom. worked fine set up in my room with my monitor on my power supply. set it up with my accessories. then moved it to her room to get it ready. her monitor worked for the last pc she had that i had just tested, but the micro wouldn't come on. it did the 6 beeps. i thought at first maybe it was a bad outlet. i tested it on the outlet in another room, but didn't plug in to a monitory same issue which lead me to believe it was the monitor. i think that the issue with the 6 beeps, well blinks, is if its a compatible monitor not the video card. so i'll get a new monitor for her and see if that works. i suggest you guys test out a different monitor if you're not finding an answer.

thanks
