I'm not surprised by this at all. A walk into any Computer Retailer and there is a large selction of Laptops and only a couple of Desktops.

Also most jobs now requiring you to have a Laptop before even being considered to be hired.

In a sure sign that the era of mobile computing has arrived, notebooks have for the first time outsold desktops in the United States in a calendar month, the research firm Current Analysis says.

Spurring demand for notebooks is their overall price drop as quality has improved

Notebook prices fell 17 percent during the past year while desktop prices dipped only 4 percent. Some of the features common in most notebooks are longer-lasting batteries, CD burners and wireless capability.

The computing crowd is increasingly requiring mobility.

There used to be a time when people expected a reply to an e-mail within a couple of days. Now they expect a response within 24 hours. People want to stay connected wherever they are"

Yeah, the other day I was filling out an aplication for Taco Bell, down in Tampa FL. They had an entire page dedicated to the specs for a laptop.
When I asked the manager if this was some kind of joke, he told me no. You have to have access to your own personal laptop in order to properly make a taco... I about shat myself right then and there.

I would love to see stats on how many jobs REQUIRE you to have a lappy to get a job. Man if you want me to do work on my personal lappy you are nutz. And the company would be nutz to do that anyway as they then couldln't control what you put on the laptop and could easily lead to a security issue. That is from a network standpoint.

LMAO. What company expects their employees to buy their own laptops? Heck, if it was required, I would walk out during the interview. Do these companies ask you to bring in your notebook before giving you an offer as proof? If I get a job at Dell, is it alright if I bring my Sony Vaio notebook to work?

Let's keep in mind that most of the educated world is building their own desktops at this point as well, so the numbers are more than a bit skewed. There are plenty of people who have not bought a desktop in over 10 years, but you don't have that choice with notebooks.
