I'm trying to install linux on my old Ambra 486dx2-66 with 36mb ram and a 800mb HD.

I've tried mandrake 8.2,8.1,8.0,7.0
and redhat 7.2.

They all crap out or have many many errors while installing.

Any clues as to what i'm doing wrong.

I can tell you that Mandrake will not install because it is optimized for 586 platforms and up and also there is no Mandrake 8.2 yet.

Use an older version of Mandrake (7.x) or RedHat (6.2),
or try installing Slackware or a "lesser" distro like Icepack, Monkey, Phatlinux etc...

The install iso will suffice. The extra iso includes lots of extra documentation (although the install cd provides docs for installed packages). It also includes SMP kernel modules, SGI workstation installation instructions, and ZipSlack. The souce iso is just that: source.

Slack is my personal favorite, although Iknow it's not eveyone's cup of tea. Debian should be something to consider otherwise.

Good luck.

if anything, its probably the other way around. the dx had a math coprocessor while the sx did not.

i recommend debian :D

I'm gonna back BingBongWongFooey on the Debian idea. I'm just a Linux n00b, but I'm really becoming fond of it! I've seen Red Hat 7.1 on a friends machine, but I like the Debian interface better. It doesn't let you install quite as easily, but what you learn in the process has helped me quite a bit! Just thought I'd add that, since I can't say much on the "Tech Help" side of Linux. :p

Yeah, that's it. Although I do remember having an option to compile math coprocessor support into the kernel.
