5th Circuit Upholds Texas Abortion Regulations

In case you've forgotten, the supposed impetus behind this bill was to protect women.

How can you continue to back it when it will lead to women being forced to Mexico for the procedure when they are unable to exercise their rights here in the US?

Keep in mind this also disproportionately affects poor and hispanic women.

So let me get this straight. There are still abortion clinics in Texas after this law right?

So instead of going to one of the remaining extra safe clinics in Texas they are going to another country? :hmm:

That is a false and incorrect statement.

Nobody is "forcing" a woman to have an abortion. So therefore she is not being forced to go to Mexico or anywhere else.

When all clinics within a 6 hr drive are shut down, yes, some will be forced across the border to exercise their rights.

This is such a political dead end for the GOP, I almost don't want to say anything to discourage them from going down this path. I will enjoy watching them torn between their rabid pro-life base and losing the women's and moderate's vote by such margin that they become unelectable.

Have you ever been to the Rio Grande Valley?

All clinics there will be shut down under this law. It also happens to be a very long drive to the nearest one that will remain open.

Also, this is where the poverty rates in Texas are at their highest. It's pretty safe to assume that a lot of the poor women in this area will not be able to afford the round trip to have the procedure performed in Texas approved clinic.

But, go ahead and stick your fingers in your ears, just like all the times in the past that these facts have been presented to you.

What would you say if I told you that you'd have to drive 12 hours if you wanted to buy a gun or practice your religion openly?

I'm pro-choice and I think this is a stupid law, but come on now... They closed the closest abortion provider, so now instead of taking a day-trip to San Antonio, I'm going to go to a backalley clinic in Mexico? That's a pretty tremendous leap of logic. The Huff-Po article references someone who had to go to Mexico because abortion wasn't legal anywhere in Texas; that's slightly different from "the nearest city with a hospital."

Yes, this is a stupid law. But acting like it's forcing women across the border in droves is disingenuous to say the least.

For those that can afford it, yes, it's an easy decision.

I'm speaking about those that can't.

Exactly. Having to do it in a hospital jacks up the price of the procedure, to the point where it makes no sense to do it in Texas at all. Those who can afford the extra 2 grand that doing it in a hospital adds can just buy a ticket to another state and do it cheaper, and those who can't will just go to Mexico, because that's all they can afford.

And?

I am pretty sure your type would have been the ones complaining about slave auctions being closed down.

1814 - Dang it, those radical abolitionist got all but two or three slave auctions in my state closed.

2014 - Dang it, those radical anti-abortionist got all but two or three clinics in my state closed.

The horror of speaking up for someone who can not defend themselves.

I agree. Can you recognize though that many posters here do not recognize the hypocrisy in supporting one of these laws and not the other (both directions).

Absolutely.

The toeing of the party lines in this country is over the top from both sides, and even moreso in P&N.

Full disclosure, I believe in the right to lawfully own a firearm. I believe the 2nd amendment was intended to allow us unrestricted access to firearms in case we need to overthrow a tyrannical government. And I believe life begins at conception, not at birth.

All that said, I do not agree with backdoor laws. If you want to ban abortion, or guns, do it the right way and approach from the front door. Don't try to sneak in the back.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

(And I was just about to, in response to TH's last post.)

So restrictions on abortion clinics to make it harder are bad but it's alright for the leftists to put restrictions on guns which are actually protected in the Constitution?

Do you read the threads you post in?

I already stated within the last few posts that those types of laws are bullshit as well.

Seriously, dude. You're gonna have to start trying harder...

Good for you 🙂

But the problem is too many leftist morons want these restrictions on guns yet are outraged if anything happens to their precious abortion clinics.

That's all you have to say after acting like such an ass? How about an "I'm sorry I keep accusing you of being a leftist any time you happen to disagree with me"?

But the problem is too many leftist morons want these restrictions on guns yet are outraged if anything happens to their precious abortion clinics.

I agree, but I also agree with this:

But the problem is too many conservative morons want these restrictions on abortion clinics yet are outraged if anything happens to their precious guns.

Go break a bald eagle egg.

Then tell the judge there was only a 20% chance the egg would have become an eagle.

I doubt your argument would go very far.

Why oh why can't everyone see that an apple is exactly the same as an ear of corn.

btw, did your daughter manage to get her free abortifacient IUD from the government yet? Hope she never needs to apply for a job at Hobby Lobby.
