I'm thinking if I should get this toy or not 😛 damn damn damn.......

Note: these 5gb models are the versions with the "original" scroll wheel. Not that it's better or worse, some people actually preferred the scroll wheel to the touch wheel. Both Mac and Windows versions available and they do not come with a remote.

Still a fairly good deal at $150.

DOes it come with a box? Do these look brand new?

Reading the details from appleshop.com on refurb items, these units comes with everything in the retail package (just like new)but with new serial numbers and probabily in a OEM box, but thats just my guess.

are these usb 2.0?

This package contains the following items:

(1) 5G iPOD for PC w/rechargeable lithium battery (with original touch wheel)
(1) Headphones (new earbud-style)
(1) Apple iPod Power Adapter
(1) Apple FireWire Cable (2m)
(1) Manual:
iPod Getting Started
(1) CD-ROM Disc w/iTunes and electronic documentation
(1) One Year Warranty limited

I think this version has firewire only.

I own the 5 gig model and it indeed connects through firewire. I personally really like the scroll wheel, but I haven't tried the solid state version. The ipod is a truley wonderful device and I reccomend it highly. That said, you WILL want more space. But if you're budget is tight, i'd pull the trigger.

now to find a deal on a firewire card.

Go find one of those Sound Blaster Audigy's on clearance @ OD....they have a FW port on them. Supposively clearing them out for $25.

The 5gb version has the mechanical scroll wheel. And Firewire only. (And IMHO - thats the way it should be when transferring gigabytes of files).

I personally, like the mechanical scroll wheel and buttons on my 5gb model, although if I found a deal for an iPod with a larger drive, I would surely have no issues with the optical scrollwheel and buttons.

fyi, usb 2.0 is a little faster than firewire unless it's firewire 800 which is only on a couple of macs.

Faster in specs, perhaps.

Hi. placed an order. Will let u know if it comes in a new box, new casing and stuff. I hope it looks brand new. I think 5GB is more than enough for MP3s, but then again 640K of memory was more than enough about 15 years ago.

Seriously, I don't have more than 2 GB MP3 that I will actually listen to. Only if I was going on a 6 month vacation would I need more than 5 GB for music. Of course the storage is nice for other things.

The Audigy SB's are awful with iPods. Do not use the Audigy.

Adaptec 4300
OrangeLink
seem to be the better choices.

I will try to answer some questions posted here, having experience with Apple refurbs and Ipod in general.

1. All Apple refurbs carry the same 1yr warranty as new Ipods.
2. Apple installs brand new batteries and cases on all refurb Ipods, you will not be able to tell the difference with a new unit. All included accessories are brand new as well.
3. There is no such things as a 5gb Ipod with touchwheel.
4. All 5gb Ipods are Firewire only. USB2.0 was added to Windows version 3rd geeration Ipods that were released a month ago.
5. You can excersise with Ipod, it will not skip. I excersise regularly with my 10 gig and previously with 5 gig, not a single hiccup.
6. At $149 it's a smioking deal, they still fetch upward of $200 on Ebay.
