My driver is popping up telling me my video card is not recieving enough power, and will be slowed down. Any ideas what is going on?

Yes, it has the extra power plugged in. The temp is reading 54C.

...?

Not an option. AFAIK, everything should be fine. This started maybe 10 minutes before the first post.

Fortron FSP-300-something (last year's 120mm fan model). All of the hardware has been the same for at least 8 months.

I haven't even gamed on it in a month or more, either...should be plenty of spare juice.

They FX series were gonna be named GFX but then nvidia realized their card wasnt worthy of the name.

...and I thought P&N had the most useless posts and posters. 2 for 3, so far.

disconnect one or all of your optical drives and see if you still get the message.

Disconnected, opened case. BIOS turned out to mostly be at defaults. Will see if it pops up again...

Hmm, however much I don't like it, the PSU is exceptionally warm to the touch...

Oh, and anyway, disconnecting optical did nothing. The sentinel notices are coming in bursts, but still coming.

Yes, and I have a 300w supply that can overdraw a good bit safely. I found a spare Enhance supply around w/ the +12v 4-pin connector, and will try that. Note that Myst IV has been the most strenuous thing it has had to deal with for at least 3 months.

None of the parts are new, nothing in the configuration is new, and they have all been working fine for months in their current config (until just now). A PSU is a lot cheaper to replace than the video card, so if anything is broke, I hope it is that.

i used to have a 5900xt, but after i bought it i had to upgrade PSU as well, from 300w->400w, cause i had similar problems. also you want to try a NV silencer on it, it dropped my temps big time(38c idle)

Junk can't handle power.. does your Comp shut down when running 3dmark sometimes? How about when overclocked?

Need 22A 12V rail minimum for high levels of IC happiness. Check out Tagan puma.. I think mwave.com had one for $38 !! (same as OCZ modstream lineup on inside)

dual +12v rails,(+12v1 17a,+12v2 16a) 24 pin(or 20) ,sata connectors and pci-e connector so you dont have to change it out on your next upgrade either,..dont let the price fool you

Haven't had it OC'ed in a good while. A few months ago, it ran 3Dmark just fine as long as there was a fan on the card. I've had the card underclocked, more recently.

How's the noise? I can't handle this spare Enhance I'm trying (no sentinel popups yet, though!). I got the Fortron because it was good and quiet--and whatever I get (since I looks like I'll need to get another PSU) needs to be just as quiet as my FSP-300-60PN. If it goes all night w/ no warnings, I guess I'll ask for cheap-but-good power over at SPCR :).

Well, a PSU is a lot cheaper to replace than the video, at least.

I speak from experience about those PSU's I have pics if you want but I have both 300 and 350W Fortron models.. neither can handle loads at all these highend video cards draw.. what's your processor? I tried them when I was tying to get quiet and they are junk..not like fortrons highend stuff. I never got around to RMAing them though, what for? so cheap not worth my time.

They seem to think it's quiet at newegg in reviews.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817101513

but dont fret they make a quieter one with a 120mm fan same insides
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817101518

Also rosewill is good and cheap.

It's a DFI mobo, so undervolting was my first suspicion, but bumping everything up a notch didn't help (back at defaults, now).

Matt2, Zebo, GOREGRINDER, Potato28: thanks for trying to help, esp. after the first couple replies...

I'll definitely try going for good power, but can't spend too much--I can probably manage $50 or so, and I aught to be able to find something that will fit in there. Until I have the money to do a full upgrade of CPU/Mobo/Video, I don't plan on upgrading, so having extra goodies for the future is not a conern (if I have the $600+ for the innards upgrade, I'll have enough to spare for a nice ATX 2 PSU).

The Enhance 300w is clearly working fine, except for being way too loud. If I can find a fan, I'll try 3Dmark (my video card is running underclocked and passively cooled, hence not trying that immediately--I know it can't do it without underclocking itself).

Yeah, those first few... they're computer snobs. Nothing wrong with the 5900XT, got one in my gaming rig right now and it plays everything perfectly fine. I don't think a faster video card would give anyone more frags.

You may want to make sure whatever PSU you get has all the "new" plugs for when you do upgrade in the future. This means SATA, 24 pin ATX, 6 pin PCIe.

Couple of my recommendations... depends on how "quiet" is quiet for you. If you demand absolute quietness, then you need something like the SeaSonic S12 series, otherwise...

I think through Sunday Circuit City has a 480W Antec TruePower 2.0 for $50 after rebate. You can get it from their web site with free shipping at the same price - saves you a trip. Don't be like me and drive a 16 mile round trip in the snow :p Circuit City link Some will argue that these aren't quiet enough, but I think most people will think it a good value at $50. Newegg costs about $35 more.

Fortron FSP400-60GLN $51 plus shipping at Ewiz is a good choice. SPCR review of unit. I put one of these in my wife's computer. Newegg also sells the same thing for about $20 more than Ewiz. A very good value for the price with no rebates.

Now's the time... SVC.com on clearance sale for $9.99 for the NV Silencer 3, the exact one for the 5900XT series. If it is light enough SVC has some cheap shipping options, plus if you are getting multiple items the combined shipping is cheap, unlike places that stack shipping costs per item.

I'll pass on the Silencer. When all is said and done, I'd like a quiet (another Nexus, maybe) fan to circulate around the video card (but not be on all the time). It has a Zalman ZM80C on it that works fine, even OCing, but it needs air to move by more than convection (in my previous case, it needed no fan at 444/940).

Just ordered that cooler for my 5900XT, thanks Zap. I had been looking at it when it was $11.99, this just sealed the deal. I think that it is a fine card too, and it even handles FEAR at decent settings in my secondary rig.

My True Power 480W is quiet and powers my main rig, so I think that it is a perfectly good choice for this situation. A friend of mine was losing his PS and his 6600GT was telling him the the same thing.

Good luck!

i have that exact videocard and got those messages so many times... i used motherboard monitor and discovered the 12v rail from my PSU was only supplying about 11.2v. Obviously thats a bit of a problem, and videocards tap the 12v pretty hard.
i replaced the psu with an antec 550 and it works wonders now.
