I'm getting a new PC that comes default with a 256MB PCI Express GeForce 7300LE TurboCache

The computer I'm replacing has a 128MB GeForce FX 5900XT 8X AGP

I'm going to be replacing the card in the new computer with a better one eventually, but for gaming which one of these is better in the meantime? My brain is telling me the 7300 should be better but I know it doesn't always work that way. When I compared the hard specs of each, the 5900XT looked better in some areas? Thanks for the help.

You wont be able to use the 5900xt in the new computer because it won't have an AGP slot. It will be a PCI-express motherboard, which is not compatible with AGP and will not have an AGP slot on it.

So you're stuck with the 7300. It should be ok for a while.

I'm hoping to upgrade very soon to a 7600GT for that slot then, I'm on a tight budget and the 7600GT has good gaming reviews and is only about $130 or so. Thanks for the reply.

The 7600GT is a solid card and is much much faster than both the cards you considered.

One problem. My comp comes with a 375w power supply and the 7600GT says a 400w power supply is minimum. What happens if I install it with the 375w power supply? Do I have to upgrade that too? Ugh.

It depend on the power supply... a quality 350 watt unit will often put oot more real power the a 550 watt cheapo model, like the ones which come with most cases.
The 7600GT doesn't suck much power compared to many other contemporary cards though, so you at least have a shot at its being ok.
