Question 5900X worth it in my use case?

Good afternoon,

I have a highly unbalanced system that I used only for triple A gaming at 1440p. I'm running an 8700k at stock, 16 gigs of 3000 mhz RAM, SATA SSD x3 totaling 2.5 TB and an RTX 3090. My frames are just fine at 1440p, but I was wondering if I would see a significant improvement in overall responsiveness and of course slightly higher 1% lows with a 5900X. What do you all think? Worth it, or not.

I'm thinking of changing to 5900x, 32 gig 3600 mhz, and add an NVME SSD into the mix.

Edit: Alternatively, I could drop a 9900k and the other upgrades mentioned.

The single thread performance will improve your 1% lows if that's worth it to you. The multi thread performance will be a huge, massive jump but that's not your focus. If those minimums are that important... there's not really another architecture out there atm.

That was my first thought... no reason to spend $549 on a new CPU and $150 on a new motherboard (and probably $100-175 on faster RAM to exploit the 5900X) when you could just slap a $50-75 tower cooler on the 8700K and overclock it.

I run an 8700k at 4.9 ghz with a Hyper 212 air cooler. Temps are marginal for stress tests, but no problem at all in gaming.

Thanks all, I do have a be quiet dark rock 3. That is why I was scared off of ocing, but I agree that it would handle the gaming load just fine. I'll give it a shot. I have always been a bit intimidated by ocing for whatever reason, but I was already thinking of getting rid of the cpu, why not?

Look at the reviews of 5900X for gaming, there are a few new games that like more cores.

The biggest jump is with X570 and PCIE4, a Samsung 980 Pro or WD SN850 makes load times AND access times super fast.

A 5900X is not substantially faster than a 5600X in most games. Sometimes the 5600X is faster. If you are looking at Vermeer, I would look at the 5600X first unless you are just hell-bent and determined to increase your core count.

I am pretty sure @Makaveli is providing solid data here that backs @DrMrLordX assertion that for gaming (short of having a 3900 and playing some very specific titles, which seems to shake up some of the graphs) a 5600x is a worthy CPU and anything north of it is a waste. Unfortunately, it's hard to find (maybe easier than a 5900x) and the unfortunate middle ground of the 5800x is most widely available. It's only redeeming virtue is that is available. Otherwise the 5600x or 5900x are both better options in terms of value.

This is true. I just replaced my 5600x (put it in my sons computer) with a 5900x. I'm seeing losses in a few games, and slightly better fps in a fewer games. You won't see any improvement going with a 5900x in a vast majority of cases. This is paired with a 3080, fwiw.

5600x is actually very very easy to find and commands the least markup (apart from the 5800x whjxh is actually seeing discounts on the used market already, I let a new one go here for cost and a used one for a small loss). Scheduling threads from one CCX to another is costly. 5800X looks good here.

Ever since I went Ryzen haven't bothered with CPU overclocking PBO does the job fine for me.

If I were looking to buy a CPU right now, it would be hard to pass on Intel. The 10400F (equivalent to the 3600) can be had for $145 USD on Newegg, and the 10600KF is $210, from a 3rd party seller no less (equivalent to the 5600x).
