I have this G73Jh Asus laptop with a 5870 radeon in it.

I've tried downloading all the different oc programs like rivatuner, gpu tool, etc and I can't overclock my card with any of them..

Has this happened to anyone else?

Amd gpu clock tool. I use it for my 5850 on my gx640 and it can hit 800 mhz (100 mhz above your card) very easily. Your's should do it as well.
 
I installed it and when I try opening it says "Failed: no valid devices found!"

Update:

I tried amd gpu tool version v0.9.26.0 and it did open but the clock showed 500mhz.. which in gpuz shoes as 700.. so I deleted that program.

I would like to know how to control the fan speed too. You would think that by now there would be a program that's user friendly and efficient for controlling your gpu? Well I still haven't found it.

Don't know if CCC is any different on laptops, but I've always just used the ATI Overdrive tab in CCC to increase fan speed.
 
I would really appreciate help with this, I can't seem to find anything on this. When in CCC, the advanced option, there is no oc option anywhere. Just a welcome screen. Top left there's different options like video and display options but nothing has oc options in it.

Is it because I have the mobile version of ccc?

I tried downloading other programs like riva tuner, amd gpu tool, and none let me oc.

I have an M17x with Mobility 4870's. MSI Afterburner works for them. Whenever you find a stable speed with it, id recommend flashing the vbios with the new speeds. If you change the clock speed from an OC program, the card will stay at that speed even when you aren't gaming, so it's best to flash the card so that it only uses those speeds when you have a game running.

Also, the clocks you can get with Mobility GPU's are limited by voltage, and the only way you can change the voltage is through a vbios flash. With mine I can only bump them up another .05v. Wish I could go higher as they're still obviously voltage limited and they don't run hot at all really.
 
you shouldn't be overclocking a laptop, it doesn't have the thermal dissipation capacity to handle it. Laptops generally also have extremely poor overclocking support (firmware support, voltage headroom, etc)
btw, the 5870 laptop card is significantly weaker than the 5870 desktop card. it is like that for all laptop cards from nvidia and AMD, they reuse the names with completely unrelated GPUs which are much weaker on the laptop side.

laptops that have these kinds of GPU's generally have cooling to match. I have 2 4870's overvolted and overclocked and furmark only gets them to 75C. The highend laptops are made with this kind of thing in mind.

it's wierd because when I have furmark opened, the sensor in gpu-z shows 500mhz. I can't figure out why it doesn't go to the 700mhz speed it's supposed to run at. Anybody have this problem before?
 
Your laptop may have a single fan with a Xbox360 like combined heatsink for the cpu and gpu depending on the design, either you need to use speedfan or a similar utility, bios fan speed tweaking if supported or it may be non adjustable, and preset based on temps.

edit: The G73 has 2 fans for the CPU and GPU located on the far left and right sides of the chassis, but it is still non adjustable and clocks automatically based on temps I believe. I have a G51 and I know my fan cannot be manually controlled, well at least not easily and not without hex editing on the motherboard and even then it's only temporary. I use RW Utility to manually edit the code in the electronic Controller chip. The simplest write switches fanspeeds permanently for about 3 seconds until it auto-corrects, but now I have a saved config that sets fanspeeds to 100% until reeboot, at which time I need to reload the .rw file to set fanspeeds up again.

is futuremark just open, or is it actually running a benchmark? your gpu is supposed to run at a slower speed whenever full power is not needed in order to save energy.
 
OCing a laptop is a giant pain. Since the programs that are out there have to interface with proprietary BIOSes, most of them only work on specific laptops, if anything works at all. With my Netbook I had to wait 6 months for the guy who runs SetFSB to write an extension for my laptop before I could OC. Unfortunately, it's possible that you're in the same situation I was in.

I'd personally reccomend finding a forum specifically for your laptop somewhere like notebookreview, and seeing if anyone else has been successful OCing.

Unfortunately when it comes to laptops, there is NO one size fits all answer.
