They screwed up the price @ 239.99

If they release it at 225$ , I'm in.

I don't see how these won't overclock to at least 850 core , 1000 memory.

This should run all of todays games just fine and if you have a crossfire board (I do) , 2 should easily outrun a 5870 in the future. Crossfired 5830's should be about 1.3x a 5870 or possibly = to a Fermi .

By the time I need 2 of them, they might be under 200$? If Nvidia has a good launch.

No way it would be priced at $199. Two of these will spank a HD5870 silly and cost the same. Hell, two HD4890s do that already and are cheaper. Though they take a lot more power and don't support Eyefinity/DX11 (not that anyone cares, but hey :p), especially in idle mode. The HD58xx has a crazy low idle mode, so even that would be excellent in a Crossfire setup with two of these.

$239 looks about right compared to a $299 HD5850 and a $399 HD5870.'

EDIT: And don't think I'm happy about this fact. But no competition does that to companies.

Maybe we'll see a 5790 in the 199~219 range at one point? That would fill the final price gap.

Funny thing is 2 5770's = a 400$ 5870 and you can get 2 of them for under 320$ shipped?

Look at the price of 2 5750's? (= to a 5850) 270$ shipped compared to a 300$ 5850.

can't wait to see OC numbers for the 5830 and how the SP reduction affects 5830 performance

5770 157$ shipped
5790 180$ shipped?????
5830 220$ shipped???????
Original msrp of 5850 260$ shipped (now at 290$)
Original msrp of 5870 360$ shipped? I can't remember. (now at 400$)

Heres to hoping!:D

midway between the 5770 and the 5850 in performance may well equal midway in price as well.

quick look shows the 5770 at ~170 and the 5850 ~300 so the price sounds about right.

IMO i feel the WHOLE ati line is overpriced.

This is what they should be at..

5670 : 69.99
5750 : 99.99
5770 : 149.99
5830 : 199.99
5850 : 279.99
5870 : 349.99
5970 : 499.99

I blame nvidia. Its going to be this way until fermi appears.

With NV not having any modern GPUs until the March/April timeframe at the earliest (and even those only the highest end enthusiast models) is there any wonder?

It's a good thing for ATI though. We may whine about paying an extra $20-200 a card, but they need the money to continue competing and bringing us great products at reasonable prices in the future.

I'll probably not have the opportunity to upgrade my 8800GT until fall of 2010. It's not that I can't afford it, I just don't want to. By then the 5770s and 5830s both should be $100-$130 budget cards and a $170ish 5850 will keep me stylin' along for the next few years. Who knows, by then maybe the ATI drivers for Linux may start to function and support those cards. I can always dream.

I kinda wish ATI would make some cool one off cards. Ala 5670X2 or 5790. Make a limited amount. Would be sweet

I thought they did with the 58xx cards. ;) Although it wasn't ATI's intention that supply was so limited.

looking forward to a review where they clock it to 850/1200 and compare to a 5870

I would like to know the difference the missing shader units makes.

I wonder if one of these could crossfire with the 5770. It'd be a nice option if you could get avg fps greater than a 5870 with the higher minimums of the 5830. I suppose it might work in a hydra mobo at the very least.

Because answering that question will shed light on if xfiring a 5830 and 5770 is possible.

Even Anandtech's review of the 5770 alluded to a $130 price point for the 5770 being more in line with how it performs.

I guess we'll see how much doubling the bandwidth helps. This 5830 could be a nice upgrade from the 5770 when it drops below $200 in a few months if it performs well.
