5820 or 7700 new system

I was going to get a 5820K, my thoughts were quad channel memory 6 cores etc.
Now looking at the 7700K and so damn confused.
Mainly I just do desktop stuff and play some games.
I do not transcode movies but I do some sas and R programming with sql data.

not sure which one to build

any thoughts on quad channel memory would be greatly appreciated for some reason I keep thinking this is a must have.

Otherwise, I'd wait for Ryzen/Skylake-X.

I'm not usually in the "wait for X" camp, but this time it makes sense if there isn't a big rush. RyZen is a big unknown as far as performance, but there are some promising signs that it will do well enough to compete and put some price pressure on Intel. That would be good news for everyone.

I would most definitely wait and see how ryzen does. If it competes well Intel may slash their prices which is good for us

I would think June show maybe?
Kaby-X will be more in my price range since skylake-X will start about $1500
But I am sure this will be a 2018 release

The IPC might be some amount better than the mainstream Skylake/Kaby Lake, which would be a first for HEDT vs mainstream. Clock similarly, more cores... whether it's worth the extra money is questionable of course.

It's a different die altogether, so calling it Kaby Lake is probably not fair. The cores are completely different.

I don't know much about the platform, but basically it'll be Skylake in 6c/8c/10c configurations with clockspeeds better than those of Broadwell-E (and possibly better than those of Haswell-E). Tons of l3 cache, etc.

I would expect more Sept/Oct but that's just a guess. And technically October is Q4 but whatever.

Kabylake-X appears to be pointless. I doubt the 6c Skylake-X will cost $1500 though. Hell I doubt the 8c will cost that either . . .

That's good news. If nothing else AMD might force intel to drop the 7700K price by $20-50. Also that will give motherboard manufacturers time to fix any teething problems with their new Z270 boards.

Depends how many background apps you run or how much multi-tasking you do. A 7700K could be a lot faster than a 5820K depending on use...or it could be a lot slower.
