Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found genetic material from E. coli bacteria in 58 percent of public pools they tested during the summer of 2012.
This shows that "swimmers frequently introduced fecal material into pools," which could spread germs to other people, the researchers wrote in their report. E. coli bacteria are normally found in the human gut and feces.
They also found genetic material from bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, whichcan cause skin rashes and ear infections, in 59 percent of pools.
The fecal material in pools comes from swimmers not showering before getting into the water, and from incidents of defecation in pools, according to the report. The average person has 0.14 grams of fecal material on their "perianal surface" that can rinse into a pool if a person doesn't shower first, according to the report.

This is disgusting. What is wrong with people and not cleaning themselves? I guess this is what happens when people use soft toilet paper.

Also, who goes swimming with diarrhea?

Oh I could have told you that. I don't go to public pools. Why? Because people are disgusting.

You are a liar if you are really trying to say you always take a shower before you get in a pool. Also, what happens if you have to take a dump after five minutes of being at the pool and there isn't a shower? Do you just go home? 0.14 grams of fecal matter wouldn't even be visible or show up on the toilet paper.

If this was really a huge problem, people would be getting sick all the time. There's chemicals in the pool for a reason. Nothing to see here.

Therein lies the potential issue though. If they are cheapskates about shocking the pool as needed, or even maintaining proper levels, the bacteria can proliferate. Add budget cuts by local governments, and unhealthy pool conditions happen.

I would be very surprised if pool chemicals were being reduced to dangerously low levels due to a budget cut. It's a matter of public health and probably carries a severe penalty + risk of lawsuits.

George Carlin:
"Let me tell you a true story about immunization ok. When I was a little boy in New York city in the nineteen-forties, we swam in the Hudson river. And it was filled with raw sewage! OK? We swam in raw sewage, you know, to cool off. And at that time the big fear was polio. Thousands of kids died from polio every year. But you know something? In my neighborhood no one ever got polio. No one! EVER! You know why? Cause WE SWAM IN RAW SEWAGE! It strengthened our immune system, the polio never had a prayer. We were tempered in raw ***t!"

You should read about Walkerton, ON.

A) That wasn't a pool.
B) The utility company was held responsible.
C) This type of thing is a rare occurrence and you can never completely eliminate any type of problem at this scale.
D) A contaminated well not being taken care of means negligence, not lack of proper wiping. Even proper wiping can leave 0.14 grams of fecal matter.

All public pools have showers. Go to the bathroom, shit, and then take a shower.

It's not hard people, take a shower before going into the pool. You don't have to do it there. I go to my work/school's gym pool and live 3 minutes away by bike. I take a shower at home and refrain from shitting and putting on hair product or deodorant before getting in the pool (the chemicals in those products react with the chlorine and make the pool even more irritating to the eyes).

ALL public pools? I didn't know you had conducted a thorough investigation since the opening of this thread. I've been to many, many pools that didn't have a shower.

What kind of piece of shit hell hole did you find these places? I've never been to a public pool without a shower. That's pretty fucking disgusting. Unless you're talking about hotel pools, which have dozens or hundreds of bathrooms in them...

If you think that is bad you would freak if you found out the levels of bacteria in kiddy pools, yet parents have no problem dropping their kids into them.

Yeah you can be sure nothing has ever pooped in those...

I can also be sure that they are many, many times larger than a public pool with ample amounts of water and space per swimmer. Plus I'd wager that you get more disgusting people in public pools than you do in natural bodies of water.

Chemicals.
http://www.livescience.com/6674-public-swimming-pools-dirty.html
One-in-eight public swimming pools was immediately shut down after inspection due to dirty water or other serious code violations, such as missing safety equipment, according to a 2008 government report. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analyzed samples from more than 120,000 public swimming pools in 13 states and conducted water quality tests -- the largest study ever done by the CDC on pool water.

Most troubling is the fact that the venues with the most disinfection violations were kiddie or wading pools and water play areas.

Each year, about 15 to 20 outbreaks of diseases, including stomach bugs and diarrhea, are blamed on dirty public pools, according to the CDC. A quarter of theses outbreaks are caused by bacteria, parasites and viruses that could have easily been prevented had the pools been properly chlorinated and monitored.

I'm sure private pools are just as bad. When you put people in water, not everyone gets everything clean down there.

On the plus side, think of it as building your immune system :)

This is most likely the case. When I was a kid in the 70s in NYC the public pools reeked of chlorine. My eyes used to burn after a few hours of swimming. I never got sick. fast forward 30 years later, I take my 18yr old son swimming in the same pool I went to, I smell no chlorine, I assumed they are using a new chemical, bam, he gets a really bad ear infection. I havent gone to a pool since. Public or private. I just go to the beach and let mother nature and her sea salt kill shit.
