5770 in an older motherboard

Hi all, I was looking to upgrade my system from an 8600GTS (passive cooled, quiet is important) to one of the Radeon 5770 series. I game at 1680x1050 and that is not likely to change until my current monitor is lying in a melted plastic lump on my desk.

I realize that most PCIe 2.x devices are generally expected to work in a PCIe 1.x socket, but it seems that not all do, so I am looking for any advice or personal experiences with the 5770 series. One of the user reviews (Newegg review for what its worth) of the MSI HAWK version of the 5770 said that it did not run in his PCIe 1.0 socket. I am still using a Gigabyte P35 DS3L mobo w/ an E6750 and it is doing everything I need it to do, but I am at the point where I would like to be able to push up the graphics settings in some games I currently play (Empire TW) and some I would like to get in the near future (Mass Effect 1&2).

So, anyone have any 5770 models that they know work either in that mobo, or in one with the older PCIe sockets? I wanted the MSI HAWK variant as it is supposedly fairly quiet with no load, and still not too much noise even when under full load.

Thanks for any assistance.

That's a great mobo, you may even want to keep an eye on the FS/FT forums for a Q6000/9000 series to come along (as long as your bios revision supports it).

Thanks guys, that was good to see the XFX 5770 running in the same board. Great idea to keep an eye out on the Q6000/9000 to upgrade into, it looks like it will handle everything up to the QX 9770.

I am looking to pull the trigger on that MSI HAWK board ($155 after rebate) or the Powercolor ($130 after rebate). Will decide tomorrow.

I just installed an XFX HD 5770 in my brother's Asus P5B Deluxe (P965) tonight. It works great.

IIRC there's roughly a 5-10% FPS hit for running a newer PCI-E 2.0 card in a PCI-E 1.0 slot. It's similar to running a graphics card in a PCI-E 2.0 x8 slot instead of x16.

Glad to hear no issues on the P35 chipset. I see the overclocks on the Sapphire, but for the XFX or Sapphire did you notice any major noise issues while running with no load? I have heard good things about the MSI HAWK, but I'm probably going to shell out about $30 more than necessary if I can get another card that is relatively quiet under no load. Not so worried where games are concerned since the sound of the game generally takes care of fan noise issues (unless it is really out of control). Thanks.

I have the Sapphire Vapor-X 5770. It's is silent at no load. About 30% fan. The rest of my system, while not super load, is not super quiet either. My other case fans add up to a moderate hum, and I can't even hear the video card fan till it gets over 70%.

I have an old dfi nforce mb. That I would like to put a 5770 board. I am trying to gradually build another pc. I have been on a mac for the past 3 years. Will eventually build an i5 system.

Anyone know if the 5770 would work on this board. Not sure what version pci-e the board is.

Thanks,
Rob
