I can get a 5700 ultra for $125 or a 5900XT for $170. I know the 5900XT is better but is it THAT much better. Thank you all in advance for your HOs.

If I have to choose between two I will take the 5700U since it is $55 cheaper . The difference between a 5900XT and a 5700U is significant but isn't that great.

P.S. If you want, get a used 9700/9800 at FS/T or Ebay.

That review is not an accurate representation of performance as Nvidia is using ANCIENT 52.16 drivers. We have seen huge improvements over those drivers of late, as has ATI and their 3.9's.

However the fact remains that the 5900XT is much much much better than the 5700Ultra and the 9600XT. It is the lowend of the high end back in the day.

The 5900XT is better because it's a generation ahead, but if the 5700u is cheaper by more than $50 dollars, it's a better buy IMO.

Think about what you just said. Both the 5900XT and the 5700U are using 52.16's in that review. What would happen if you ran both of those cards on current drivers? Would it not increase the performance of both cards yet yield the same differences?

I wasn't saying that i was commenting on how badly the Geforce cards were doing. But that is a side note, and i dont want to get into it anymore lest we start another flame war.

Yes, definately can do without a flame war. We are not comparing ATI to nvidia here. We are being asked 5900XT or 5700Ultra. Thats why I linked to VGA III at Toms as I thought it would be a good comparison of the 2 cards running on the same driver version.

Yeah sry i even brought it up.... dunno maybe i was feeling ARGUMENTITIVE :p or something.

However to the OP you will likely see much higher FPS on all cards in that bench (ATI and Nvidia, not sure about XGI and them), due to driver updates.

I am not a BIG gamer at all. How many 57 yr olds are?. hehe. But I do enjoy em and my wife of 35 yrs enjoys watching them as I play. Thanks again for your input.

Those games will run well on either card. But to answer your question, the 5900xt is a better card. If the difference is $50, and you dont have money to burn, get the 5700U.

I'm only 32 and have been married just one year (as of yesterday). My wife can't stand to me in the same room with me when I'm gaming, especially after seeing some scenes in Doom 3. To her credit, she did buy me a new video card for our anniversary! You're a lucky man walter! Maybe my wife will enjoy watching me play in another 34 years too. Can't imagine what types of rigs we'll be on by then.
