56K modem problem with AOL

BACKGROUND:
Sister's computer.
Normally she's on my LAN at home but she's house sitting for someone. Only thing available is dialup. And she likes AOL.

I install a modem, installs fine, and works for a couple months.

THE PROBLEM:
Then she calls me, says it stormed, computer was on and ever since she can't connect.
I investigate, and it will dial, do the crap noise, but just hang there forever until it timeouts.
There is a computer at the house and it uses AOL to dial up and it works just fine.

TRIED SOLUTIONS:
I take the computer to my house, does the same (TRIED DIFFERENT PHONE LINE)
I take the modem, move it to a different PCI slot (TRIED DIFFERENT PCI SLOT)
I setup AOL to use different numbers (TRIED DIFFERENT ACCESS NUMBERS)
I reinstall AOL, (TRIED REINSTALLING PROGRAM)
I replace the modem (TRIED REPLACING MODEM)

The new modem does the exact same thing.

Any ideas on what to try next before I reformat/reinstall everything on her computer?

The problem is with Dial-Up Adapter.
(more than likely duplicate settings in the REGISTRY)

Remove all the AOL Dial-Up shortcuts, remove Dial-Up Adapter,
remove AOL software.

Reboot and reinstall everything.

I'll give that a shot this afternoon and report back.

I did something similar. OS is Win XP. I found an AOL connection in her network places and deleted that, thinking AOL would install it again when I reinstalled AOL. It did not.

well, I just made a lengthy reply and then noticed you tried replacing the modem already.

so i deleted my post
