On my parents computer, I set up a NetZero Platinum account ($9.95/mo) with a 56k modem and couldn't connect any where near 56k, only 28k. I couldnt find any info on their site if they support 56k, any know? The modem I purchased was a cheapo <$15 shipped, Encore Netodragon Motorola 56k internal data/fax modem.

Know anybody with a different dial-up account you can try? Most likely it is their phone lines, not netzero,

The Encore Netodragon Motorola 56k internal is most likely the problem as I've replaced and returned many of them in Rigs because of their poor performance...It's definitely not the ISP as Net Zero hits fine @ 50Kbps+ providing the phone lines are good and the connect is tweaked.

Yeah, ask your neighbors what connection speed they are getting. Or if they are on broadband, maybe you could take your machine over to a friend's place to see what happens.
. You can only have one Digital to Analog conversion in your phone loop or you're stuck at 33.6kbps max. There are quite a few modem troubleshooting sites that may have help if there are other problems.
. The neto dragon based modems aren't particluarly good. Look for Intel, Conexant, or Lucent/Agere based modems (though I've had terrible experience with Lucent).
. There is a new chip out on modems from Archtek/SmartLink that sounds good but I don't know of any reviews on it.

do think about upgrading the account to the 14.95 high speed because its a piece of junk.
it's a little faster but the images are compressed and do not look good. it's ok for someone who just whats to read text allday long but what the internet without images?

Hmm, I guess I should take the computer to my house and test it... dont feel like pulling the modem out.

If it isn't the phone line, do you guys know of a good modem at a bargain?
