56k diagnostic lights

I just recently bought an external 56k modem (fucking awesome!!!!) and there are several diagnostic lights on it. Can someone here explain what they mean?
They are labeled: CS, RS, CD, OH, RD, SD, TR and MR.
 
CS - ???
RS - Request to Send
CD - Carrier Detect
OH - Off Hook
RD - Receive(d) Data
SD - Send Data
TR - Transmit/Receive
MR - ???

Some, not sure, guessing at the others.

Wow, talk about a time warp thread. I didn't think dial-up even existed anymore. What's next? A thread like "I just bought a new TV and it came with this little box with buttons on it...I think it's called a "remote control"...what do I do with it?" :shocked:

Dear lord I'm reaching back...

Clear to send
request to send
carrier detect
off hook
receive data
transmit data
terminal ready
modem ready

And a little factoid about 56k. In order to get 56k one end of the call HAS to be digital as in a T1 or PRI, T3, etc. It got to the point that you could fit 32 digital modems on what looked like a stick of memory.

First modem: 2400bps.

The olden days, when downloading a 5MB file was best done with a program like Getright, which could recover from broken downloads.
 
Or when your mom picked up the phone...
1200 baud was my first one - a vicmodem if I recall. I was amazed that you didn't even need a phone, unlike my dads 300 baud which had the acoustic coupler.

Damn I feel old now.

last month I bought 2 USR 56k external modems. One is an X2 model. I paid $10 for both.

I am going to use one for a project to attach it to a C64.

IIRC there was a striker in it that would hit a piece of metal like a tuning fork. Then a motor on the TV would turn the knob to change channels. The original ones only had a single button and you would get to a lower channel by cycling through the knob. It had no batteries.

I call shens on this... Even a fully loaded Commodore 64 system with all the accessories was never more than $2,500.

Now, an Amiga on the other hand...
