566 overclocking mis-adventures

OK the short version. I`m using a BH6 board with a MS-6905, voltage at 1.70 (in soft menu, slocket at "auto&quot😉. I can`t get passed 83 FSB. When I go to 100 FSB, I get post but start getting registry errors before windows comes up. Is this a memory problem (I`m using PC100 set at 3 cas)or do I need to crank the voltage up on the slocket?

83 FSB is murder on components unless you crank down your PCI & AGP bus...The PCI bus will default to 41.5 MHz, & the AGP will probably want to do 83.

You'll probably have better luck at the 100 MHz FSB (66 AGP & 33 PCI) than you will at 83...

Why not shooting for 100MHz? Maybe already been there? Right though, 83 could kill you too, due to the components not liking the out of spec pci bus speed.

I guess I was unclear (most likely from sitting here for hours playing with bios and the sort) I`ve tried 100 FSB and I can`t boot up to windows , I`m getting registry errors before windows splash screen and system powers down.

Yeah using boxed HSF with thermal grease and looks flush (remember a post on that and kept on eye out for that) , doesn`t seem to be getting overly warm. Temps around 95.

95.F? My 566 @ 952 has yet to top 80.F! Something's wrong...

You got any better coolers around? Maybe a Golden Orb?

i had a similar problem with my cel533a. make darn sure that your h/s in on tight and flat and that you dont have gobs of paste between the 2. i had problems at first with my old alpha h/s and fan and could not run stable much above 533. after i reassembled and made sure it was put together correctly. all is fine now up to 880 @1.7volts. (thats as high as my Abit BM6 will take it. So now i need to break out the soldering iron and wire to connect a few pins on the cpu, to alow me to set the voltage up to 1.85max.
as shown here:

good luck and make sure its all together right.

Is 90 your idle temp or full load temp? Just for comparison mine idle at 76 & peak at 88 under a full load.

A lot of people have done just fine with a retail setup for cooling but you may need better with that chip. Also take it up to 1.8volts if you have to, but do think about better cooling.

Toro🙂

Try backing your AGP divider. I know some cards dont like 83mhz, let alone 100mhz. Up your voltage if you can to 1.8 and see what happens.
Cooling is everything, if you dont have good cooling these celerons wont even begin to overclock.

I'm using a BH6 too, I don't think 95 degrees is all that unusual. Mine runs between 89 to 93. Thats using Motherboard Monitor.

For those who think that's high, I think the temperature on a BH6 is not read at the chip. Its more of a case temp I think. So its affected by video card temps, etc. Anyway from what I've seen at Overclockers.com 95 isn't that bad.

I'd try going to 1.75 and 1.8 volts to see if you can get it stable at 100mhz. My retail 566 is stable at 875/103 at 1.8 volts but I run it at 850/100 and 1.75 volts for a bit of cushion.

🙂

<< You should have waited for a duron. >>

For some people dreaming about computers is enough.

For some of us tho', we want to build them and use them, NOW.

🙂

Man you guys rock , thanks. I`m cranking her up. Still dont see the motherboard (soft menu) volt settings changing (same 1.30-1.70) when I change jumpers on slocket. Nobody has mentioned this PC100 SDRAM so I`ll assume it`s not an issue.

abit mobo's disregard the slotket.

go find the abit flash trick

(set voltage in softmenu to 1.7, flash bios with /cc option, power cycle, set voltage up to 1.85 and GO FASTER! FASTER! 1.9! YEAH BABY

Yeah baby! Flashed bios and got volts up to 1.80 Looking good. One things bugging me though , I set FSB to 100 (of course), AGP divider to 2/3 and my Soft Sandra PRO program is showing PCI and AGP buses are set too high. Is it still freaked out from the 83FSB I was using for a couple hours?
