@OP... What display resolutions did you test on to get your results? My brother is looking to get a 7850 (waiting for a price drop)... is your 7850 producing less heat and noise than your previous GTX 560?

Nice sidegrade ...But be warned usually when switching vendors ,, going from nvidia to AMD gives BSOD and other driver install problems. I hope it works out for you. gl

I have a PNY 560 Ti OC that I'm replacing with a Sapphire Radeon HD 7850. I fully intend on overclocking this card as high as possible in the hopes that I won't have to upgrade for a while (or until Nvidia comes out with some competition). I do like PhysX. I do like the technology support Nvidia is able to provide for previous generation cards. However, the overclocking potential of the Sapphire card (along with no competition from Nvidia) lead me to this decision. If it doesn't work out, I could always sell off the card.

Any tips or suggestions from the Peanut Gallery? :)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Results: Default setups in respective CPs. Default card clocks.
System: i3-2120 8GB RAM

Batman: Arkham City
No AA
8x AF
All other settings maxed out (no PhysX enabled)
54fps Geforce 560 Ti OC 1GB (PNY OC Edition 850/4104 Default) GeForce 301.24 Beta
65fps Radeon 7850 OC (Sapphire OC Edition 920/5000 Default) Cat 12.4

Heaven DX11 Benchmark 3.0
No AA
8x AF
All other settings maxed out
31.5fps Geforce 560 Ti OC 1GB (PNY OC Edition) 850/4104 (Default) GeForce 301.24 Beta
38.2fps Radeon 7850 OC (Sapphire OC Edition) 920/5000 (Default) Cat 12.4

Again, this is before I do my own OC testing to see how high and stable I can get it. "Side-grade"? No.

Hmm about 20% difference on both tests(i think), a little more than a sidegrade imo.

I just ordered a sapphire 7850 too.

But I'm upgrading from a 9800gt, lol, no sidegrade here.

I was surprisingly underwhelmed by the 7850 even overclocked coming from a GTX 460 that I had running at 950mhz on the core.

Now with better cooling I have it running even faster but I'm hoping for more from it down the line. I really believe that these cards have 1300mhz+ in them and we are being artificially held back by AMD. My card runs at 45C fully overclocked and under full load. Something isn't right. I should be able to get more out of it.

I think most of the 7850 and 7870 cards are still at launch prices though.

My fault, I thought the 78XX cards got a minor price cut too like the 79XX cards did. Some of the 7850s are below MSRP now though.

9800gt is like a hd4850 in terms of performance so you basically jumped 3 generations of GPUs. :)

There are limits to what the silicon and board/components are capable of. Short of sub zero cooling, lowering the temps are not going to give you drastic gains.
Perhaps, but there's also the Powertune fiasco and lack of voltage adjustment for a lot of us.

Updated with a fairly conservative OC. No voltage changes. 1075/5500 Temps didn't seem to get above 60.

You should see what it's like with Arctic Cooling installed. 45C max with a 1200mhz overclock and my computer is 100% dead silent. The fan doesn't even go beyond 30%.

If this is a side grade, then so is 5870 to 6970 or after considering oc potential, 5850 to 6970. And also 480 stock to 580 oc

Well, I had to sell off the 7850 and now have gone to a 560 for now. A 670 or 660 may be in my future one of these days. For now though, it's back to a (non-Ti) 560. I can't really complain though. I got it for $100. $20 loss on the sale of the 7850. ::shrug:: Them's the brakes sometimes. I'll put up some more numbers with that one, just to have a better picture. When I finally get enough scratch up for a better card (or until I get frustrated), I'll put up new numbers.
