560 Ti -> 7850 -> 560 ::sigh::

I have a PNY 560 Ti OC that I'm replacing with a Sapphire Radeon HD 7850. I fully intend on overclocking this card as high as possible in the hopes that I won't have to upgrade for a while (or until Nvidia comes out with some competition). I do like PhysX. I do like the technology support Nvidia is able to provide for previous generation cards. However, the overclocking potential of the Sapphire card (along with no competition from Nvidia) lead me to this decision. If it doesn't work out, I could always sell off the card.

Any tips or suggestions from the Peanut Gallery? :)

If u can sell off the card with no considerable loss i would say go ahead :D
But 7850 won't be a huge upgrade over 560 ti,what about 7950?

Don't base ur purchase decision on overclocking ability of a card imho.It can lead to tremendous frustration down the road.Buy on out of the box experience. But if u r a oc fan sure go ahead ;) 7850 is a nice card and i would prefer the asus dc ii version.

Stock vs stock, it isn't worth upgrading. But if you are going to oc the 7850 35-40%+ and can get the final deal for sub $125ish or so, then it may be a decent deal imo, that is $125 difference i meant :)

Normally, I'd agree. The potential was too tempting though. That said, if I'm not satisfied, I'll just sell it off. Also, if Nvidia's comparable offerings down the road pique my interest or if I wind up missing PhysX enough, I'd sell it as well.

Here's to hoping it can OC as well as reported elsewhere.

Be sure to get a dual fan 7850, such as the Sapphire or Asus. Don't go with a single fan cooler since you plan on overclocking.

This is a total sidegrade.

You wont see any difference in FPS from 7859 and 5xx series. Rememeber the video card renders it, and right now we dont have a bottleneck with your 2500k ,,,, wait it out, a bit,,,,,,, and grab a SSD instead. You can upgrade to Haswell or 2015 intel super core with 16 cores,, JK JK JK heehhe... but hey one can dream!

Thanks for your candor. :) I actually downscaled to an i3 2120. The video card cost difference will only be roughly $100. I'll find out this weekend if it was worth the upgrade. I'm looking at a number of things for this:

  1. Will I miss PhysX?
  2. Can I effectively OC it?
  3. Will the display differences I've seen between Nvidia and AMD show again (basically more vibrancy with AMD - even after messing with the Nvidia slider in Control Panel).
If all goes well, I'll be happy as a clam. As mentioned, if not I'll just sell it off and get something else.

Side-grade at stock, yes.

At stock you will be 10-15% faster on an avg. once overclocked that difference will increase to 20-30% comparing both Oced. In some future games with more VRAM it may increase further. As long as you could get this upgrade for sub $100, it is worth it. However a 7870 oc would have been better.

wow this generation of cards is so sad that people are basically side grading to get something at the same price point that last gen launched at.

7870 is a waste bro. Overpriced for what you get

A 560 ti oc is like a 6970. A 7850 oc is like a 7950. 6970 to 7950 for 75-100 bucks is side grade? 20-25% performance increase besides more VRAM, less temp less heat less power newer tech and future proofing for sub $100, cant get better than this

at STOCK clocks its only 10% faster than a gtx560ti which is nothing but a side grade. overclocking is the only way the next gen AMD 28nm cards don't look like complete failures at their launch price points.

But they are no longer at their launch price points. If you're buying now, are you paying launch price? No.

Pretty close to a sidegrade, but the 7850 ought to oc better and has much more VRAM and has better power/heat and possibly noise depending on which models you are comparing. Personally I never upgrade for anything less than a 35% improvement stock vs. stock, but that's just me.
