LOL...it was known about and safeguarded by the UN...since before the 1991 Gulf War.

Israeli warplanes bombed a reactor project at the site in 1981. Later, U.N. inspectors documented and safeguarded the yellowcake, which had been stored in aging drums and containers since before the 1991 Gulf War. There was no evidence of any yellowcake dating from after 1991, the official said.

I hope that was a joke.

What Bush was talking about was a scam by people with their own agenda, which Bush added to his own agenda.

Actually Bush was quoting the English intelligence service. It may have changed by now but at the time the English believed that their report was correct. AND many people actually believe that Joe Wilson's trip actually proved that Iraq WAS up to no good, but in a way that Wilson totally missed.

If you dig around google enough you might find a story or two that explains how Wilson actually helped to prove that Iraq was up to no good. I think the basic idea was that Wilson found Iraq connections in places that made no sense which suggests that Iraq was trying to build a trade network. But it has been a few years since I read that story so I may have the details wrong.

Either way the details really don't matter. When we got into Baghdad one of Saddam's scientists showed us parts of the nuclear program that he was told to bury in his yard thus proving that Saddam intended to restart his nuke program the second he could get away with it.

the reference to yellowcake from niger was removed BEFORE the state of the union from at least one other speech by the CIA. The damn thing was considered false at the time of the speech. So we invaded a country, wasted trillions, caused the deaths of tens of thousands, lost thousands of soldiers all because he at some point in the future would have started a nuke program? This is justification?

Tuwaitha and an adjacent research facility were well known for decades as the centerpiece of Saddam's nuclear efforts. U.N. inspectors documented and safeguarded the yellowcake, which had been stored in aging drums and containers since before the 1991 Gulf War. There was no evidence of any yellowcake dating from after 1991, the official said.

Seems as if we are discussing two different issues.

To reiterate THIS YELLOWCAKE WAS KNOWN TO THE UN AND WAS BEING STORED IN IRAQ LEGALLY. To attempt to use this as some sort of justification is incredibly...incredibly dishonest.

Should also add that this was not the African yellowcake that Dubbya used as partial justification to invade Iraq.

Y'know... just to be clear.

Ahh yes, the Yellowcake scandal.

Everybody knew Iraq had Yellowcake, the UN monitored it while it sat in a warehouse for decades. BFD?

No, what Bushy boy tried to claim was that Iraq approached Nigeria in 2001 to get *MORE* yellowcake, outside of the UN's oversight. Nigeria is one of the world's primary producers of yellowcake.

What was funny about the situation is that the situation was an outright fabrication, created by an Italian swindler to peddle influence in Europe. Anybody who looked at the yellowcake memo from the Italians would know that it was a blatant fake.

The fact of the matter is that the "swindler" (Who had been arrested many times, once for robbing a bank) had a girlfriend who broke into the Nigerian consulate, stole a memo, a stamp, and some paper, to create a forgery. The original base for the yellowcake memo was nothing more than an Iraqi ambassador's visit to negotiate a renewal of an Iraqi/Nigerian agreement to allow Iraq to dump garbage in Nigeria.

They used this base memo to create a ridiculous forgery rife with problems. Such as the referral to the incorrect ambassador, constitution, president, laws, and other situations. All of these inconsistancies were spotted by the Italian, French, and British services.

However, the CIA seized on the opportunity. They used "cross checking" with other agencies, all who said it was false, yet ignored that. They then brought it to one of the primary intelligence analysts in the US. He shot it down, said it was crap.

what did the CIA do? They said he was full of crap and essentially circumvented and ostracized him.

Bush, despite his underlings *KNOWING* it was crap and most likely, himself knowing it was crap, presented it as factual information.

That's all of the information.

I thought the CIA said procuring this type of material from Africa was an absolute untrustworthy intel. Obviously this is a bit old and obviously it probably came from outside of Iraq from somewhere. What do the Plumes have to say about it?

So where did the Iraqi's get the last batch from? I want to know who would sell Iraq this stuff, so we can keep an eye on them as supporters of terrorism.

If you actually read my post you'd see that it was from a completely untrustworthy piece of intel. RTFP.

Plumes?

Who cares where it got its last batch from. It got it *DECADES* ago and it was perfectly known.

What was at issue in 2001 was whether Saddam was trying to *RESTART* and *REACQUIRE* his nuclear program. Everybody on the planet knew what he had, everybody was worried about what he might be trying to get (or had already gotten outside of what was known)
