I would think it would be quite easy to prove this mathematically, probably the hardest part is doing the "random pour", but even that should be quite simple for a computer with the proper random function generator.
The way I would explain it is if you filled a container with spherical M&M's and then pressed them down into the container someway with an even pressure distribution to avoiding local deformations, you would end up with the elipsoid M&M's and you could add a few more.
