5400rpm v.s. 7200rpm

I go a dell vostro laptop. It's got a 5400 in there right now. I was planning of putting a 7200 in it's place.

The hd is sata. I was hearing there is not that much difference in performance?????

7200rpm drive of same capacity will be significantly faster. I tried to install Autodesk Inventor on 5400rpm drive.. and it took me whole hour.
 
Can you be more specific about what hard drive is in the laptop and what model you're considering as a replacement? Also, what tasks you use the computer for.

Longer battery life, better hdd performance, higher tolerance for drops & bumps without data loss.
 



ANother for7200, there is a big difference especially with vista.

If there is better perf, how come so many people on notebook forums complain about the system haning sometimes with SSD?

I don't want huge spikes of performance up and down, a Std HD is still more consistant.

it won't. You didn't put one, how do you know?

Simple explanation is that although it might spin faster, it will spin for less time, thus in the end making no significant difference.

Get SSD - get a life, that thing costs as much as another laptop.

Which drive? Newegg has 320GB 7200rpm WD Scorpio Black for $100, that is great deal for amazing drive, just read the reviews on the page.

Hands down, that is best and capacity+performance/price ratio

I use it for gaming, development, multimedia, multiple operating systems.
 
Scorpio black 320 user here. Nearly silent and fast. Get four hours out of 2GHz C2D, 4GB RAM, 512MB GF9300 video, etc. Cannot see a difference in batt life over stock 5400 rpm 250 seagate the machine came with and it's noticeably faster.
 
YES, NO, Maybe so!!!!

This is so dependent on what you are comparing,...

IN GENERAL,...
7200 rpm drives will be overall faster in overall performance
for laptops,... overall 5400 rpm drives will be overall better "in terms of battery hours per full charge"

Now,... why are you replacing the HardDrive should be asked,...?
Performance? Then get a 7200 rpm drive after researching the drives in that category and space you are looking for
Battery life? The get a 5400 rpm drive after seeing which are good performers while giving you extra minutes

Space? Well you can upgrade space at either level quite easily,...

Do you have an issue with your current Harddrive? the only reason to really upgrade would be space issues or harddrive not working,... if you replace just the harddrive for performance,... yes there is a bit to be had,... but not at all when you consider bang for the buck,... if you are looking at overall performance upgrade you need to look at RAM or possibly a new laptop,...
 
main reason why i hate using laptops- 5400 RPM drives. they are considerably slower and make my computing experience miserable. going from my desktop w/ a raptor to the laptop makes it feel like a dinosaur!!
