5400 8mb cache hdd

I was just wondering if upgrading from a 5400rpm notebook (2mb cache) hdd to an 8 mb cache would be worth it? Would you notice any speed gains or ????

going to a 7200rpm drive would make a much more noticeable difference, depending on what you are doing the extra cache may or may not be noticeable

in most cases it doesn't matter, 2MB to 8MB cache is not as noticeable as 5400RPM to 7200RPM. Save your money for a 7200 RPM drive.

That's what I was thinking, just wanted to confirm though. So save is what I shall do seeing as the 7200rpm is 2x as much... 🙂

His question did not involve a 7200RPM drive, that was not a given option. There is obviously a difference between the 54 and 72 drives, but that wasn't what was asked.

Is your current drive 4200RPM or 5400RPM? If 4200, an upgrade to 5400RPM + 8MB cache will make a significant difference. Also, is battery life a concern? If so, compare power consumption of the 7200RPM drives to that of the 5400RPM drives you're interested in.

The power consumption of the 7200 RPM drives is mostly moot. This was discussed in length by myself and others in previous posts if anyone wants to do a search.
