Not popular in USA.

Samsung is Korean! I don't see how they could have been one of the leading Japanese brands. It made me laugh though. Thank you, seriously.

Seriously...Akai may be rebadging Samsung TVs these days, but couldn't you figure out he was referring to the Akai brand? This is, after all, a thread on an Akai TV. And someone had inquired about the Akai brand.

Went tonight to look at them again. It's a rebadged Samsung. Well, at least a Samsung remote worked with it. The picture looks as good as the HD Samsung they had beside it. Not quite as good as the RCA they have for $963. I think I'm going with that one.

RCA Link

I saw the RCA & would have to agree it was noticibly better pic than the AKai.It might just be the lighting in my Sams but the AKai did not look good compared to most of the other TV's there.Anyone have one of these?

Damn i wish this was widescreen (i'd pick it up in a minute if it was ;) )

They have a couple HD widescreens there in the 11-1200 range.

Also found a Daewoo 43" HD plasma for <$1700

Niw that plasma is VERY interesting at that price. Any reviews of it anywhere?

I've talked to a couple TV repairmen who say fixing RCA projection TVs is what keeps business flowing, and that RCA TVs are one of the few things they think an extended warranty would actually be worth it.

So I hope their newer units are more reliable.

the AKAI name/font/logo etc... were sold off about 12 years ago... about the time they pulled out of the US market and returned to Japan/Germany. It's just a name that went to the highest bidder...

Was that Daewoo regular price? Or was it a return or discontinued item?

I know.... Akai used be a quality brand a few years ago. Back in the late 80s/early 90s when Panasonic VCRs were considered among the best in the US, a lot of people abroad considered Akai VCRs to be better (they still considered Panasonic to be good though). I wonder what happened to them, kind like Sansui was a quality brand in the 70s but today they (or whoever bought their name) just sell crap. Even Nakamichi seems to headed down that road too, though some of their product line is still high quality.

Edit: looks like Akai is still strong outside the US at <a class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.akai.com" target=blank>www.akai.com
</A>
The US Akai as someone said in this thread is just the name sold to anybody that wanted to sell electronics, so I'll bet these are rebadged lowest possible cost items from lowest possible cost manufacturers.

When I was a younger man I used to own my own sales & service(I actually worked on things called tube circuits once in a while!) Zenith TV is what I liked to work on due to the way they were put together. RCA is what I always had to work on because ...yep...they kept the business going.

Nice picture. Grrrreat repeat repair customers!

Does anyone know who ownes them now? Thompson?
