Delta miles to get a free flight to Aruba. Any tricks of the trade to get 6,000 miles relatively quick? Would love to hear them....

It's through delta. Planning a trip to Aruba with the woman in january and realized that i could get a free flight with my miles but i'm only 6k short!!!! frustrating.

flight costs $399 regular and it would cost me $177 to buy the remaining 6k straight from delta (doesn't seem worth it to me) so i thought i'd try here

Check out flyertalk.com.
They should have a lot of suggestions.

Can't you buy miles? I know you can for United.

EDIT: Think of the $177 as the cost of the flight. Not terrible.

I'm confused...why would it not be worth it? you'd be saving $222 on the cost of the flight. If you can get the points for free, then that would be best, obviously, but if not, buy them.

If I still have to pay $177 for the flight I'd rather just pay the full then wait until I accrue enough to use my points for a full ticket in teh future. It just seems a waste to me to pay almost half the price of hte ticket AND have to use all your miles

isn't Continental and Delta in the same partnership program? I wonder if I can transfer some miles over from there...

There are a bunch of listed promos found here. I believe there's a new 5k bonus for joining an dining rewards network. Otherwise, straight from the Delta site...

Agreed. And it is only $399 round trip to Aruba? That's def not worth using your miles on. Use the 60k on 2 round trip tickets to Hawaii!

A lot of airlines will allow you to purchase miles in 1-5k increments.

Usually it's not too expensive.

why would u use 60K miles for a $400 flight? Also realize you still need to pay taxes. You should save it for a more expensive flght to asia or EU

Normally it's 25k to CON US, 30 or 35k to Hawaii. So maybe not on 60k but pretty close, and 2 tickets to hawaii are worth over $1k, not $399.

1. I wouldnt buy miles for $177 and then have to use up all my miles when the ticket is only costing you $399. It isn't worth it.
2. Sign up for an AmEx Delta SkyMiles card and make a purchse. You get 15,000 bonus miles with your first purchase. However, by the time you get the card and wait for the first full month statement (which is when the miles post), the Award ticket may not be available anymore.

That being said. You sure you want to go to Aruba? I was there with the wife back in June and didnt really enjoy it. The tradewinds make it so uncomfortable to be outside on the beach. The Iguanas dont help. Not to mention how overly commercialized everything on the island is.

If you arent set on an island, think about going to somewhere like Barbados. Went there this year also, and it is way more "Caribbean." People are very local, friendly, great food, good climate and wonderful beaches/oceans.

Just my two cents. Have a great time, whereever you go!

AFAIK you cannot trasnfer Delta miles to Continental, or vice versa. You can use Delta miles for a CO flight (and vice versa), but you have to book through Delta and all of your miles have to be in a Delta FF account. You cannot mix and match.
