535W enough for this setup?

So this is what I'm planning to buy:

+COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 Case (2 fans, no fancy lights)
+MSI OC GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
+OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
+Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz
+ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
+ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard

Also have:

-2 cd/dvd combo drives
-2 older 7200rpm hdds (250gb & 300gb)
-floppy drive
-TV tuner
-X-Fi XtremeMusic soundcard


My current PSU is an Enermax 535W, has dual independent 12v rails that are 18A each.

It's been running an ASUS A8N SLI-Deluxe/AMD 64 3500+/2gb ram/7800GTX (plus all those extras and a crappy Thermaltake case with 7 fans and flashy garbage all over it), for about 3 years now, ish.

Will it still be good after the upgrade, or should I get a new one? If I had to get a new one I was looking at the CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX 620W.

I'd grab a newer psu if you are using a quad. Quads benefit from 8 pin connector which I don't think that enermax has. I used my Enermax 420 for my current pc for awhile until I traded with my dads EW.

It will likely run but better safe than sorry

If I went with dual-core instead would it work? haha. I'm not really looking to build a ridiculous rig, I just really need to replace what I have now. The mobo is kinda crap, dead chipset fan for a while now (got the first one replaced, but the replacement one died and I stopped caring). Video card overheats way too much, and I've tried cleaning it out to help it but it didn't do much. Case has terrible airflow and way too much extra fluff that I really just don't need, and CPU I just kind of want to upgrade, but it's not really a priority *shrug*. Then I figured if I was doing all that I might as well get some new memory.

Also just saw this 4-pin to 8-pin adaptor, would that work?

Went to http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp and it says I'd need under 500 even if I ran two 8800gt in SLI.

Looking safer and safer to just keep the 535W that I have, but if I could get more opinions from those more educated than me that'd be great.

i personally would never use enermax as ive seen them spark and ruin entire systems. and think about fact that do you want to run your psu at maxed watts or buy a higher efficiency psu with more watts but not use them all.. like your psu is prob rated 530w at 20C or something low.. 30C maybe.. read up on it,,

Not a big fan of the Centurion 5's front 80mm fan so I'd say go with a Centurion 534 because it's got 120mm fans all around.

As far as the case goes, yeah I really have no idea what would be best. I learned my lesson about the fancy looking cases with a whole bunch of crap on them that I don't need, so I just want something simple, lighter if possible, and has good enough airflow and fans that I don't have to open the side of my case and blow a floor fan into my computer all day just to keep it cool enough.

Don't worry. We're in the same boat in terms of not overclocking. I run my computer on a Centurion 590 and I don't like anything showy either. However, if you're going to get a Centurion, it's going to be VERY HEAVY. I've two Cooler Master cases (the other one is the Cavalier 3 which has the same internals as the Centurion 5) and both of them are a good 45+ pounds fully loaded.

To be honest I only picked the case that I did because it seemed to have really good reviews since forever. I have no idea what to look for in a case... but at this point I think I just want it to be open enough for everything, and have just 2 big fans that create good airflow. And maybe at least 1 front/top/side USB & headphone jacks.

i have alot of centurion5's that ive bought to give away.. one hell of a case for 40$ shipped.. (coolermaster used to sell the return ones on ebay for like 5$+ship.. they do have 120mm front fans..

yup that psu you linked is pretty bad ass.. id say some have bad luck with those but they will rma it if your one of the unlucky ones.. also buy.com has it for 125 minus rebate if you can wait on the slow shipping..

I dunno... I think it could work with a quad-core, although maybe the PSU has degraded from use over time (they lose some ability after a long time, like laptop batteries)
Also, Enermax isn't super high-quality, like some have said... So its a tossup. Get a new one if you want.

some of the reviewers for the psu you linked said the psu caught fire or produced smoke and died heheh.. great brand not sure about that unit and doubt its modular.. get the one i linked there.. its 104$ after rebate and using 10$ google check out discount.. or 140$ if you dont use rebate or google check out bonus.. super good psu just ugly red and ugly cables.. works super good and is quiet and most people around here rank and rave over it.. wont find anything near its quality for under 150$...

A couple of them, yeah, but there's also 92% of the reviews that were very happy with it. And I still tend to believe that the percentage of the unhappy customers who will post reviews (as warnings) is higher than the percentage of happy customers that will post reviews. Also, the 620HX WAS the one I was originally looking at, so I agree it looks really good.

P.S. On Newegg, the very first review for the 620HX says it shot sparks out the back died ("dead dead", hah) and that it has taken over a month to get a replacement through RMAing. Doesn't change my mind that it looks like an amazing PSU, but just saying.

As much faith as some of you people put into consumer reviews and basically try to find the worst possible reviews and warn against a product with any bad reviews...I am suprised you have bought any hardware at all.

BTW I already told you that the HX620 is basically the same PSU as the PC P&C Silcencer 750

Another option time though!! :-D What about the Corsair 650TX. Looks like more PSU for less money... not modular, but I can't see that taking off that much of the price. Is there something else wrong with it that I'm not seeing? heh.

Corsair TX650 is the exact same PSU as the HX620, but it isn't modular.

nah its not even close to the p@C "silcencer" 750

it has big fan on the bottom, modular cables, diff amounts of connectors etc.. no idea if the guts are the same but highly doubt it..


will you see any of the psu's with a review that says it killed someone? No as newegg prob edits those out hehe.. but there are tons of psu's with only 1 year death stories (maybe they are packed better or more sturdy?)

i like to look at reviews products have bad batches and newegg ships some things terribly (just paper packing) if you think this is false get real..

They are coming here asking for advice from people that can reply specifically to their questions and hopefully back up their suggestions with some hard facts.

What is a computer to you? A fashion statement? Ugly red stickers? Ugly cables? Bitch please. It's a power supply, and it sits inside your case and powers your components. You make it sound like it's in a fashion show every day. I've used power supplies with every type of cabling: nonsleeved, sleeved, heat shrunk, and the ones that Corsair uses on their HX line and I've never had a single issue with any cabling. But of course, nonsleeved cables are unacceptable by your standards. The red, yellow, black and white cables are just too hard on your precious, fashion-conscious eyes.
