I just got this time running a 400m. I know I'm quite fast but this is the first time I've actually run a race. How would this compare to athletes at the college level?

edit: I'm 20, 5'7" 112LBS

Eat 3 large bowls of rice with a plate full of meat and veggies every meal and 2 chicken bakes between each meal. Also, have icecream and 24 chicken wings before bed. Then tell me it was in your genes to be thin.

I ran low 50s in high school. Runners in college (depending on the college) run anywhere from 45-48. Jeremy Wariner, the faster 400m runner in the world at the moment, runs in the 43s. Also, when did you race? Did you just race by yourself or against others at a meet (or not at a meet)? I'm curious.

That may be so, but that doesn't mean you can't get bigger if you want to. Sprinters are usually bigger guys since they have to create massive amounts of force to accelerate and keep top speed. I was 5'8", 140 when I was sprinting. I'm now training for the UC Davis track and field team and I bulked up to 155.

It wouldn't. BTW are you male? That is a very slight frame.

Lol, be gentle, man. :p I know I was fairly disappointed when I didn't get recruited for running 50 flats. That, however, was in about 8-10 weeks of training. I'm hoping to get about 5-6 months of training this time :)

It's a fast time, quite fast for high school but merely average for a D3 college. If you can get under 50 then you'll start to attract some attention.

Hm, 53 in CA isn't even competitive. It depends on what state you're from, I guess. The guy who won state my last year of track ran a 45 sec 400m. Bryshon Nellum. Crazy fast guy from Long Beach Poly. He now runs for USC and probably has a chance at Beijing.

Yeah, plus I came from a very small school in a very small section of the state, so if anyone ra n under 55 it was a big deal :D A 45, now that's just crazy. I remember a kid in JuCo ran around 48 seconds and I thought that was superhuman.

Oh my son...so much to learn!

I spent 6 years in Davis (4 years for a BS and 2 years for an MS) and now that I live by the beach in SoCal, I've grown a certain hatred for that fuckhole we call Davis.

And that was before they shut down the 'Tina. :D

But really, the school is great, and the professors, staff and student body are pretty great (not assholes/uber-competitive) like people at UCB or some other place, but not complete idiots, but man...110 degree summers, 40 degree winters, rain from November 'til April. Hot because of the lack of trees, nothing to do, uber-left wing fascist city council, university administration that doesn't give a shit about its students....yeah, I'll pass.

Can't say I miss it much.

But it's not a bad place to live until you're 21 or 22. But unless you're married, I wouldn't dream of living there much past that.

Having said that...if I ever make it up there (I'm from Chico...Chi-town like WHAT!?) I'll hit you up. We'll go to Sophia's or Woodies or something and hit on some 19 year olds. I could get into that.

Sorry for the thread jack OP, lol.

Well, I lived in SoCal for 18 years - I figured I'd find some place a bit more laid back. The school is great, which is a lot of what I was aiming for. I'm not here for the summers, but the winters do suck a lil bit. Btw, lack of trees? I've never seen SO MANY TREES in my life! In SoCal, at least where I lived, there were probably 20% of the trees there are up here. It's all concrete and crap. I don't really care about the city council, so that doesn't effect me and the university admin has been alright with me so far. It may change in a little bit, when I complain about my psych professor refusing to answer my e-mail about a grade change (2 points away from an A- that I can prove were taken away mistakenly).

I think it would be a really nice place to raise your kids, but then the city council might be a bit of the pain in the butt if what you say is right :p Sure dude, lemme know if you ever come up. Road-trip friends are always welcome :)

PS: Where do you live in SoCal?

In a meet... I got 52.8 today so I think I can get better if I want ;)

10 seconds off the world record and you don't know how fast that is? Sounds a bit off.

10 seconds in a lot in that race. I ran a 10.7 in the 100 which is about a second off the world record but if I was to race against that world record time I would be left in the smoke.

If you want to run in college you need to break 50. If you want a good college you should be in the 47-48 range and be youll be lucky to make the 4x4 relay..

I ran a 49.5 and had a half sholarship to Uconn. I also had very good times in other races though and a Decent long Jump(21.5")

Hopefully the OP won't mind the highjack. Free bumps, right?

Anyway, you wanna see trees, go to Chico. Seriously. It's nuts.

I live in Redondo, right by the Hermosa border.

And yeah, I've been to Chico once in like a year in a half, so I probably should go visit my friends there at some point. And I always make a habit to stop by Davis to pick up some Guad. Literally the only thing worth stopping in Davis for! =]

Tacqueria Guadalajara.

Probably the best mexican place I've ever been to. And I live in Los Angeles!

If anyone knows of a place like that down in Socal, let me know!

Oh, I mean it's a bit "off" for a person with that time to not know how fast it is. It would be similar to a person running a 2:30 marathon and not really knowing how it compares to the fastest runners in the world. When you ran your 10.7, I'm sure you knew precisely how fast it was and what the world record was, for instance.
