52x cd-rom only reading at 12x!

I've got a Creative 52x cd-rom. Now I went to burn a cd and I needed CDRwin. So I download it and went into options and it said max read speed for that cd was 12x and the max record speed for my burner was 4x. Now the speed for the burner is ok but for the cd it's 40x off, whys that?

Try enabling DMA for it if it's not already enabled. My friend had an Afreey 50X that said it ripped digital audio at 25x or something, and it went at around 10x until we enabled DMA.

Yeah DMA is enabled! I will run a test using sisoft sandra. It takes for ever to install something though, it's like not read it fast. The cd hardly spins.

Ok my score for Sisoft sandra is 1058.

Heres what it says
10x CD speed
5417 RPM (estimated)
Buffered Read: 225 MB/s
Sequential Read: 1533 kB/s
Random Read: 346 kB/s
Average access time 113ms (full stroke, estimated)

Drive
CD-ROM/DVD Device Creative CD5230E
Drive Controller Secondary IDE controller (dual Fifo)

Hi

I had 1 year ago the same CD but X48. and one day I discoverd that it's only 32. the INFRA ( what is it ??? ) was 48 but the actual speed was only 32. when you have INFRA 24 so you cd is X16. in the case with INFRA 48 I am sure for 100%.

today I have an ASUS X 50 and he rocks ( after I have an AOPEN that didnot move at all )

Also, it says "Max" speed because it is not always that fast, only at the very edges of a cd. The closer to the center it is the slower it reads, IIRC.

Nope, Eyor's right. Fastest is at the outer edge of the cd.

jsbush, are you copying an audio cd? If yes, then it's probably normal. (DAE speed is slower than the rated max speed)

No it just said the speed of the drive was 12x and sisoft sandra says it's 10x.

Edit: Here's what CDRwin says

Maximun Data Reading Speed: 12x
Maximun Audio Reading Speed: 12x

CDRWIN does the same thing to me. My Plextor 40x MAX scsi cdrom drive is only listed as being a 16x reader, yet my Plextor 12/10/32 scsi cd burner is listed correctly as being a 32x reader. Sandra reads the 40x drive as being in the 30's when I test it. BTW I'm using CDRWIN 3.8c.

I'm running 3.8c to. What cd did you use to do the test? I used first cd of NOLF.

Still it shouldn't be 10x though that's kind of slow.

I am not sure exactly how the ratings for "X" are done. The rpm of a cd is the same for the center as the edge. The linear distance travelled at the edge would be greater. I have heard cd's are read from center to edge. Anyone have some sites for general information on how such things work?

I have that exact same drive and I got one of those zipcd 12/10/32. I'm only able to get it to burn CD audio at 8X, with DMA on and everything even though the DAE says 24X, what a shady CD Rom Drive

When you test your CD-ROM's speed, make sure to use a CD with lots of data on it (650MB would be very nice), and no scratches. This way error handling doesn't come into play, and your cdrom can read all the way from inner to outer tracks. Don't expect to see your MAX rating because you'll get an average transfer speed, which will hopefully be about half or better, of what the rated max speed is.
