Thanks for the recommendation, which model did you buy?

Don't forget to check out Office Max-they are clearing out Cendyne exteral cd burners for $19 and $29. You get not only the enclosure, but a black cdr/rw drive as well.

I got 2 of the Bytec cases about 18 months ago from Compgeeks, and they both work great with hard drives in them. Haven't tried anything else in them, but as the prices go down, they're an even better investment for back ups and otherwise. I use them with my two laptops, bot USB 1.1, and they work just fine. Hooked em up to my Dell PE400SC, and was FLOORED at how fast USB 2.0 actually is! If you're in the market, the Bytec's work great-- but can't honestly compare them to anything but the ADS enclosure that stunk from CC (returned within a day).

For clarification, here's the DRIVE CASE I got, USB Only version.

Anyone know of any website that has a reivew/comparison of all these external enclosure.

I know newegg.com has customer reviews on their external enclosure.

I plan on getting one for my HD and wanted to get one that I can leave on 24/7 without any heating problem.

Same here! I am looking for a HD Enclosure w/ USB 2.0 that will work well with a Nforce2 Chipset MB. I have read many negative posts regarding NForce2 motherboards/USB 2.0/and HD Enclosures... seems there are some chipsets (in the HD Enclosure) that do not work well with Nforce2 Motherboards.
I am looking for a HD Enclosure with USB 2.0 and Fire Wire (optional). Thanks

I just bought NEC 2500A from Newegg  and I'm looking for suitable enclosure for the drive.
Does anyone use any of enclosure with dvd-burner? Comments from FW show mixed result-- somehow discouraging since some could only burn dvd-r or dvd+r using enclosure.
Any suggestions?
Thanks:)

So is there significant difference in performance between using a hard drive in an external case and having a hard drive plugged in normal (via IDE)?

A little slower, but not too much considering USB 2.0 is pretty darn fast already

booting from a usb2 device is a factor decided by your bios rather than the external device.

Most BIOS from the last couple years allow you to boot from a removable drive.

to answer some questions about these i have been using them for a while now with 3 harddrives and 1 8x dvd burner. There is no significant difference between using these and having internal drives. they are a great way to add cheap storage to a laptop. All of my systems which range from a 450 to a 3Ghz machines boot of them. Now if you are still riding the short, usb1-1.1, bus than these might not be for you but for the firewire and usb2 cats out there, these are a great way to add space without having to upgrade your PSU. I like them because i can add a TB to my system and subtract it without losing uptime.

They site that they offer a USB2.0 card if you don't have USB2.0.

Does that mean that this case isn't backward compatible to USB1.1?

Your Dream Come True. ALthough it is not the fastest CHipset, it is fast as hell. Hirewire makes a great difference with it too.
