Hello, my father in law bought a new Sharp LCD, and wants to use it as his main TV, but also wants is as his monitor for his PC. He wouldn't need to use them at the same time, or PIP, just a different input for TV and PC.

TV Inputs/ Outputs:

*
HDMI? Input x2
*
Component Input x2
*
S-Video Input x1
*
Composite Video Input (A/V) x3
* Audio Inputs (L/R) x4

He is running an AMD shuttle with onboard video. NO gaming, just internet.

What (cheap) AGP video card would be necessary to accopmlish this and run at 1900x1080.

The on board video won't do unless it has a DVI connector. If it does then all you need is a DVI to HDMI adapter like this.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16882125190

Then he can hook it to the TV through DVI though there would be no audio. Chances are the on board video doesn't have DVI so he will need a new video card. I would recommend the x1950 pro if it will fit in the system. That should be your best bet for connecting the TV using the DVI adapter. The x 1950 pro should easily support the TV's Resolution though i don't know if it will be any good with games.

Don't know if that will work since the VGA won't be supplying a signal to the right pins for full HD support. If the video card or onboard video doesn't have DVI then it probably won't work.

mpilchfamily - no HDCP, but that has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with anything

I don't think you know what you're talking about.

any VGA signal can be converted to DVI signal, and any DVI signal can be converted to HDMI

DVI-I is actually a hybrid signal:

4 pins of it are analog (DVI-A) and these are the ones used when you convert from VGA.

The rest of the pins are digital (DVI-D) and these are the ones used when you convert DVI->HDMI.

EDIT : More info with examples here.

So, no. VGA->DVI->HDMI won't work.

As for the OP, as long as your shuttle board has a DVI out (or you buy any video card with DVI output) you should be able to use 1920x1080 no problem for 2D. Now if you want HD-DVD / Blu-ray / DirectX 9 / DirectX 10 acceleration, get a current-generation vid card. Otherwise, just get something with a DVI output.
