I want to know which one is better for now and probably better in the future. The max resolution I can play at is 800x600 until next year so any help would be appreciated!

well if those are you option and you have to get one RIGHT NOW, get the 1GB and 9800, because ram is utilized for a lot more than gaming and video card. But I would recommend you wait so you can get both the ram and the 6600gt or perhaps even a 6800GT

I've used a 9800 Pro with 1 GB (but I recently upgraded to 2GB), and for the past week I used a system I built with a 6600 GT and 1 GB of RAM. With 4x AA and 16x AF enabled, the 9800 Pro actually did a bit better. With AA/AF disabled, the 6600 GT did far better, but the framerates are so good on both with AA/AF disabled that you won't notice. I only did because I ran benchmarks.

There's a big difference between 1GB and 512MBs in the newer games. I'd prefer the 9800 Pro with 1 GB.

Hmm Thanks guys! I'm on a VERY limited budget. If I could I'd get 1GB w/ 6600GT but I just can't. Thanks for all the help everyone :).

get 1gb now, wait a little while for 6600gt to drop (soon next gen cards are out), and then get it...

I won't be getting money for a while anyways...so I don't think I can do the 1GB THEN 6600GT.

Its more expensive to replace a graphics card than it is to nab more ram later. I would go with the better card (6600 GT) and upgrade your ram when you get the money.

6600gt with 512. that is exactly my setup, and i can run all current games at 1280x1024 and a lot of them at 1600x1200. all with high detail levels. the only thing less ram will effect is loading times, and just slightly. i havent noticed any problems while in a game. you can just pick up an extra stick later if you get the money.

If you can only run them on 800x600 anyways, then the 9800 Pro with 1GB RAM would be the better choice. A 9800 Pro can play all games at pretty decent resolutions. Get it now, then upgrade to a next-gen card in the future.

9800 Pro with 1 GB.

As much as you guys like to say the 6600GT is a great step up from the 9800 Pro, it's really not.

I'd say get a 6600gt and 512 now. If you come across another $40, it will be a lot easier to grab another 512 and stick it in than trying to sell a 9800pro and get a better card.

More like paging during a game, which decimates performance.

Oh I never looked at it like that...

Go for the 1GB and a 9800 Pro. By the time the 9800 Pro cant run the newest games, you would need an entire new system.

Hmm everyone seems like they're going for the latter...but others bring out some good points...like buying extra ram later...what should i do??

I would say 1GB RAM vs. 512 will be a better improvement than a 9800 pro over a 6600 GT.
But... I agree that it will be easier to come up with an extra $40 or so to get another stick of RAM.
Tough decision.

I guess I would go with the 1GB RAM and 9800 pro.
