512MB HD4850 or 1GB HD3870 X2

To make a long story short, I can afford either of these cards. Which is the more powerful? haven't kept tabs on cards for a long while.

4850 will beat the 3870 X2 in most games and it will use much less electricity also.

And, as a note, newer games always favor newer generation cards more & more as code is optimized for the new hardware. So while the 3870X2 has a bit more raw muscle it won't win in the long run.

Grab a 4850 or even a 4870.

4850... but the for the same price as the 3870X2 you could probably pick up an HD4870 which would be much better.

i was in the same boat you are right now last july, i chose the 3870x2 over the 4850. some benchmarks showed one ahead of the other and some showed it the other way around. they are very close performance wise. i bought mine for the simple fact that i wanted to try a dual GPU video card out. i have no regrets with my decision to this day, no problems playing any of the games i want to play and excellent performance.
