512mb->1gb->2gb->4gb->8gb RAM?

Hi.. i have previously posted my queries regarding cooling chiices and methods here ...
my question now here is .. I have a p43.0 HT with twinmos 1gb 667 ddr2 and msi p4m900m2 mobo..it supports up to 2gb..( not sure if it goes up till 4gb.. doesnt say in the box) anyway... i plan on upgrading the cpu to a c2d or quadcore... and also get 1 more 1gb strip...question is ... so far with my 1 gb alone it runs fine ..when i play games .. like nwn2 , warcraft and run apps i dont see much running problems ... (i have a crappy x550 256 gpu) i dont run them on high resolution...

If i do add in another 1gb of ram and get it to 2 gb .. will i see any difference in performance ?..... i know that from 512mb to 1gb thereis a big difference ...

what about those who have a 2gb and have upgraded to 4gb ...?.. what difference do u see ?.. where do u see it ?.. loading time ?.. speed ?... graphics quality ?.. or anything else ?...is 1 gb of RAM more than enough... ?.. or is it time that we all just get 2gb straight when we get a new pc ... ?...

what do guys think ?.. upgrade or just keep it at 1gb ?...
pls help me decide ....
thanks

You'll see a difference going from 1GB to 2GB, but not as much as you did going from 512MB to 1GB.

You need matched pairs.
1GB x 2 = :thumbsup::laugh:
512MB x 4 = :thumbsup:
512MB + 512MB + 1GB = :thumbsdown:

You will see an improvement, especially with the newer games coming out. If you run Vista, or decide to run Vista any time soon, you will notice that 2GB of RAM helps out a lot. I even noticed a bit of a difference going from 2GB->3GB with Vista. But 1GB-2GB will really help a lot, especially with resource intensive apps including any games you play. Right now the difference you get from going over 2GB is not very much. But it will be noticeable more as software continues to require more hardware resources.

Hey..thank you blain and lightningrider...hmm... ok.. u both said i'll see improvements..but i'm wondering ..improvement as is in performance by meaning of ?.. faster loading time ?... when u play games it laggs less ?... or i can open up more apps and multi task.. maybe all 3 types ...? ... lets say i do this ...

A -> i keep my old cpu..( p4 3.0 HT ) and add a 1gb .. so now 2gb RAM

B -> i keep my old 1 gb RAM... but upgrade my cpu....

what sort of improvements would i see ?

thanks again guys...

More RAM means more things being done at the same time, more things in the background, faster loading times. I noticed an improvement in BF2 loading times going from 1GB to 2GB, and even having loads of applications in windows open at the same time (folders, browsers, potatoshop, video) it's a lot smoother at switching around because it doesn't have to hit the page file as much.

Well if you have more memory, you will have smoother performance. If when you are using an application your memory usage is at 1500MB for example (that's roughly ~1.5GB), and you only have 1GB of RAM, then you will notice that things become sorta sluggish, instead of fast and responsive like you would expect them to be. This is because you don't have enough memory, and the system needs to write to the hard disk to use virtual memory, which is a lot slower, and will in turn, slow down your application by a lot. If you have 2GB, then everything will be smooth like it should be since the system will never have to use virtual memory.

Upgrading your CPU will mean overall increased performance. Things will load faster, run smoother etc. If you get a dual or quad core you will be able to run multiple intensive cpu programs at once without too much slow down.

Since your board doesn't support dual channel, what about going for 1.5GB RAM?
Some things are happier with >1GB but don't really need >1.5GB, so 1.5GB should give you a nice improvement.
I ran 1.5GB for a bit and in some things like games there was a nice improvement. Going up to 2GB didn't really make much difference.

Any particular reason for saying that? On Intel 965's (at least, if not more in the 9xx family) that configuration will run in dual channel mode according to Intel.

Hmm..interesting ... so u guys say that i dont need 2gb of RAM... and 1.5 should be more than enough ..and that 2gb is probably frying just 1 piece of french fry with a a bwhole litre of oil... is it ?.. then why do i see people with insane rigs that have up to 4gbs of RAM ? like the rigs from alienware and such ... ???

I think my mobo supports dual channel .. i think .. i must go and dig up my box and read the manual ...
So.. then why 4gbs ?... what is all that excess RAM for then ?.. how is it useful ?

thanks again for your posts ...

I won't run mine that way.
But I will log that information into my memory info. drawer. 😉

Thanks for the heads up.
