512 vs 1 Gig of ram

Just wondering the advantages and disadvantages of the two. I have a Shuttle AN35 400 Ultra and would like to get one of those 2500 bartons and over clock it as far as it will go. I've read that a gig of ram won't take an over clock as well, and may not add that much unless you're into CAD or high end graphics. I'm presently running Win XP Pro and do play games like UT, UT 2003, and plan on Half Life 2 and Doom 3 when they do arrive. Any thoughts? njrich2

I didn't notice a difference, but I purchased another 512 stick of Corsair low latency anyway.

With a gig of ram, your programs will load faster and things will be a bit speedier in windows, especially XP and if you have alot of programs running at the same time.

I have a 2500+ overclocked to 3200+ and with a gig of Corsair XMS PC3200 running dual channel, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Saw that post, but was wondering if anyone had problems overclocking with a gig. Thanks anyway. njrich2

It depends on what you use it for. If you do lots of gaming or video editing, go ahead and get a gig, otherwise 512MB is more than enough. I game a lot and I o nly use 512MB without any problems. I might get 512MB more once D3 and HL2 come out though.

Oh, yeah:

In Windows it dosent make much of a difference. But it helps out in games like BF1942 (mininal) and large Multi-Player games such as Planetside and Star Wars Galaxies. And also if you do some serious stuff like AutoCAD (probably more in this case), Photoshop or movie editing. There are plenty more I forgot though...

I recently went from 512 to a gig. Didnt notice much difference. Matlab runs more smoothly and so does a few others things. Got a few points in benchmarks too. I mainly did it for the next round of games...

Also, I overclock pretty heavily and had no issues.

It helps a little? It helps a LOT. When I first bought BF1942 it was the slowest POS ever. Certain maps like bocage take HUGE amounts of ram. In some maps, my fps would be around 70 but when I was in bigger maps like bocage and battle of britain, the game just lagged and the fps went to about 10! I bumped the ram in my system up to 1gb and now every map runs great.

If you play games, you NEED 1gb of ram.

Even with 512MB of RAM, my system doesn't show any sluggishness unless I try to use VMWare, or Photoshop, or both at the same time. 🙂

Battlefield 1942 Prefers 1 gig

Overkill to go to 1BG of ram? It think that if you have 512MB and notice too much pagefile use slowing you down, then get more ram. If not, don't do it.
My main games are UT2003 and NFS Hot Putsuit 2. I'm fine with 512MB.

ramscheap. i'd rather not shutdown all my explorer/word windows to play a lousy game.

and yes, 1942 uses more then 512. desert combat uses quite a bit more. even simcity 4 did.

I went ahead and upgraded to 1GB in my system a few months ago even though I don't play many games that demand that amount, or any video editing... I can tell you that in everyday use it does feel a little faster just using things like Dreamweaver MX, listening to music, browsing, etc. if you're trying to do all at once. Probably a good idea to just go ahead and get it to be prepared for forthcoming games/apps that will be sluggish without it... unless you're planning on building a new system shortly after the release of DDR-II and feel you can hold off till then, that is.

So basically if you play games that use gobs of RAM, or other memory sapping apps (databases, CAD, etc) go for 1GB, otherwise 512 is fine for now.

We do a lot of large image photo stitching at my work, and upgrading to 2 GB of RAM made a big difference. Our images consist of 80 GB worth TIF files, stiched into an image that is 25000 x 25000 pixels in size.

Read grasshopper.. my machine is overclocked from 166 To 200fsb and it's running 1gig divided between two sticks of ram.
I haven't pushed it further but I'm sure it would do another 10-15mhz cause it's super stable at default voltage.

Try 512 and get more later if you feel that you need it, otherwise its fine.

512 MB is enough for light work in XP. When I load up >100 MB Illustrator files with other programs in the background though then the machine slows to a crawl with 512 MB.

The way i see it, i just went for 1Gig and never looked back. It's nice to know you don't have to worry about closing extra apps to play BF1942, or putting a DL on hold because u wanna watch a DVD or something.
