Uhmmm, if your running 9X and have that much memory, just Disable Virtual Memory!

In a WinMe machine, I had 256 megs ram, disabled VM, everything was running great until I loaded Deus Ex, It wouldn't load, said "not enough VM"

I upped it to 384 megs ram (still VM disabled, and Everything ran Great! Even played Deus Ex! and Very fast BTW.

If you have 512 megs ram and set ConservativeSwapFile=1 and set VM to let windows manage it, I can't believe it worked worse.. I'd double check my settings..

At least try Disabling VM. You shouldn't even need it at all with 512 ram.

Sounds good in theory but it actually isn't. I tried this as well and it doesn't work. I BSOD'd and I had to reinstall Win2k. Apparently the memory is managed well enough that you don't need to do this. Just set your swap file to 100mb min/max and let it run. Anything below that and you'll start getting alerts that your pagefile is too small.

Interesting topic.

I just added another 256meg stick, all my timings at 2,2,2, Strong, all the tightest timings. The extra 256megs makes a noticable speed improvement, I'd estimate large programs load at least 10-20% faster than before, and I can load more programs at once.

I have my swapfile set to 600megs=min=max, and I don't have that "[386enh]ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" setting in my system.ini. I'm running WinME.

My roomie has 768megs (temporarily) on a Win98SE machine, and it made a difference from 256megs he was at before... we use similiar settings. Are we not noticing something you are, or are your settings somehow wrong?
