$51 for Athlon XP 1700 from TCWO.com

they have nice prices on everything up to the 2100+ too. $91 compared to $117 at new egg. how is there shipping though, newegg has free shipping on a proc.

good price. I wonder how many more good price drops we will see as the newer AMD processors are finally hitting the stores, and merchants unload the older stuff. To wait or to buy, that is the question.

3 Day FedEx shipping is $3.95, making this $55 shipped.

Newegg's XP 1600 just went down to $53 shipped.

Looks like tcwo lowered prices already in accordance with AMD's Monday price drop. Right when I'm in the market for a processor too. Can't wait to see how low prices get next week!

god these prices are freakin' awesome!!! I need to find some customers do I can build a new system just for fun!

I am building a simple system for my daughter. Can anyone suggest a reliable MoBo to use with the 1600 or 1700? Onboard sound and LAN would be nice, as would at least a 4x AGP slot, since I don't think I want to rely on onboard video. Overclocking is not important here; stability is.

You might consider an nForce board. I've found them to be as or more stable than the Via boards, the onboard sound/lan are great, the onboard video (GeForce2MX) might even be sufficient.

Maybe an Asus A7N-266VM? $68 @ Newegg.

Another good suggestion

Both look good, and the ASUS looks especially sweet, but another question. The $30 30gig Maxtor HD I bought is ATA133. I know I can run it just fine at ATA100, but can anyone suggest a basic board that is also ATA133 capable? If not, I will likely get the ASUS from NewEgg. I've had good luck with them in the past, and they made things good the only time they made a mistake.

Just found it at tcwo.com.

XP1700 is even cheaper than XP1600.
The only problem I have with TCWO is: *OEM CPU's come with a 20 day warranty without fan purchase, 1 year warranty with fan purchase.

I don't like being forced into buying a HSF I neither need nor want just to get a decent warranty...

JMO, of course.

Sounds like a good situation for an ECS K7S5A
Not if stability is an issue. I have had 3 that are shaky at best. I like anything AMD-761 based, if performance is not an issue. The problem I had is pretty much detailed HERE

The ECS K7S5A, once set up right, has a reputation of being stable as hell. It didn't get to be the best selling motherboard ever based on price alone.

If you don't care overclocking. Asus A7N266-VM is a very good board.
It has almost build-in everything, Video, Lan and hi quality sound.
I think this board is used by Sony and HPQ.

best selling mobo ever?
where did u hear that from ?

just curious

Probably best to wait 3 weeks... price may be cut... or better yet, 12 weeks...

But if it's AQOZA then it's all good...

I dunno..I built my wife an 800 Duron system using this board and some old Kingmax pc150 sdram I had lying around. Loaded XP Home on it and haven't had so much as a hiccup out of it since it went online eight mos.ago. Maybe I was lucky?

If you go to pricewatch.com you can see that just about ALL amd chips are coming down. Heck you can get a Athlon XP 2100+ for less than $90 now. Now thats some bang for your buck 🙂

And finally, Ender from LostCircuits.com gives us one (review) for the road. A review about the ECS K7VTA3 Rev 2.0 motherboard. Let see some of what Ender had to say about this board:

"As the smoke clears from the launch of one of the most successful boards in recent history (we are talking about the ECS K7S5A), ECS is promoting its VIA KT266A-based K7VTA3 Rev. 2.0. The board in question is basically an OEM board with relatively few options but an exceptionally low price. The lavender-colored PCB distinguishes the K7VTA3 from its competitors, otherwise, the board is solid but offers only moderate performance and only a barebone minimum of features and close to no tweaking options. For the record, the K7VTA3 is very stable and not geared towards the overclocking or enthusiast market but rather towards the budget oriented consumer who looks for a trouble-free board even if it means not to be able to squeeze out the last bit of performance. The OEM legacy is also visible in the additional proprietary headers that appear somewhat redundant for a retail board. Nonetheless, the price / performance ratio is right."

That's all I can find right now... I've heard the best-selling statement mentioned in many forums as well.

I know it sells very well, and that many have had good luck with them. I had 3 bad ones, and 2 friends that "let the blue smoke out" during normal operation. The issue I linked to above is well documented, and has been addressed (I think) in newer boards. Just my 2 cents. 🙂
