Well nothing else should be expected, every time you turn around there is another Android rehash phone coming out. I like Android, but it is insane how many phones are pushed out

What's wrong with more choices? 😕

customization dilution for one. when the main guy that is the brains behind cracking, altering and modding a specific phone gets a new phone, he redirects his efforts to that new phone. happened with my winmo 6.1 phone, im sure its happened more than a few times with android phones, with so many choices out.

that would be 182,000,000 activations a year. That seems kind of high. Even 300k/day seems high. For reference, as of Jan 11, iOS has only sold 160 million devices total.

there is also issues with devving.

my android apps don't work on some android devices and i have absolutely no clue why. i've just gotten emails from people saying they tried to download it but it told them the app is not compatible with their device.

then you have multiple resolutions that you have to deal with as well which can make layouts look not as desired on certain displays.

oh and i don't own an android piece of hardware so it's kind of hard for me to just test it out on the hardware.

I'm a very avid Android fan, but you're right.. there is always "something" going on with every phone model. With so many models out, some with physical home keys, some without, various cameras and all of this other stuff it just gets discouraging when looking at a new phone.

Even a phone that is almost totally based on stock that I was looking at - G2x - has various issues that no one can figure out. And with LG having four separate models now and the glacial pace of updates I don't expect them to be fixed anytime soon. Even the Galaxy S II, a phone that you kind of expect to be absolutely amazing (imagine an iOS on a phone with those specs?) has various issues with TouchWiz and all that crap. Yeah, I know there is custom roms out there, but it gets kind of annoying to have to deal with all of that.

Because of all of this, I'm really looking at the Pre3, only because HP is controlling both the hardware and software (like Apple), but even a WP7 with their much stricter controls seems to be a better option. The *only* thing that holds me back on another OS is that there is no Google Voice app on any of these.

When Android first came out, I was like ok, that's nice but we already have iphones and windows mobile phones. Then Android started to come out on a lot of phones and really started to kick ass.

When it came time to replace my windows mobile 6.1 phone I immediately dismissed windows mobile 7. They were too late getting into the game and 7 seemed more restrictive to me than the 6 series was. Iphone would have required me to switch carriers and while the Iphone 4 is nice I didn't like how restrictive apple was with applications.

Along comes the Evo 3D with dual core processors, the latest android, and while gimmicky but still neat, no glasses required 3D.
If I was less tech saavy I may have chosen an Iphone but I prefer a phone I can mod without having Apple throwing a fit over it and without apple censorship.

Too true. So many phones coming out that the manufacturers just give up on previous models (Samsung, I'm calling you out). VRZ just sickens me with a new phone and commercial a week.

Serious question, does this include phones that were flashed with a new Rom? Every time I flash a rom on the 1st boot I get a system message about how my phones been successfully activated. If this counts there are days where I alone have been responsible for 20 of these 500,000 😀

Honestly, I don't think it would skew that 500k figure all that much.

There is a large active community of Android modders on the internet, but compared to the overwhelming number of regular non-modding consumers, it's a very small minority...

You know what's funny is that Android needs all these different devices to have more activation than the iPhone 4.

But, also how accurate could these be, considering what QueBert just said? Especially with iOS, how they put iPhones and iPod Touches and iPads all in one category.

Anything to actually back this up?

AFAIK this new phone activations and does not count flashed ROM's

No, the funny part is Apple fans are still locked into the "single phone" platform mentality. But that should change soon when Apple "needs" to start selling more than one phone at a time to keep up with the rest of the market. 🙂

Huh? It's common sense. Modders have and always will be a small minority compared to the huge number of regular non-modding consumers.

Why would they need to? They're already the most profitable handset manufacturer.

Because it looks like Google might do the same thing to Apple in the mobile market that Microsoft did to them in the PC market.

Apple is the most profitable right now but if Android continues growing at this rate that would likely change.
