If you get their promo emails, there is a code for $5 off the Seagate 7200.10 500GB HDD with free shipping. Pretty good price especially if you don't pay tax.

Comparison to the WD WD5000AAKS for about the same price?

I'm still a bit wary about the new 7200.10 drives (and large-capacity drives in general).

PATA version is $129.99 plus ship, FYI.

My HTPC doesnt have any SATA controllers, and until the price gap gets bigger, I'm too cheap to buy one :)

Yeah, seems you need to buy these bigger drives in pairs, and either mirror them, or use 1 for exclusive backup for the other one.

I just had a 400GB go south (Seagate) under 1/2 month of actual use.

The Seagate has a 5 year warranty and the WD has 3 year warranty. These drives are said to be among the best.

Well, I was more curious about the "reliability" aspect of the 7200.10 drives compared to, say, the 7200.9 line of drives. I've read and heard horror stories (although that's to be expected with any product, especially drives) and was considering waiting for the next iteration of drives (7200.11?). Warranty doesn't do much good (other than getting a new drive) if I end up losing my data and having to waste time restoring from a backup.

I might order one tomorrow (my first Seagate), though I'm still wavering between this and the WD (but it has no 4-pin molex, wtf?).

Everyone always has the brands they like and hate, so feel free to take this however you will. I personally am a huge Seagate fan. 6 of the 9 drives I have are seagate (the other 3 were killer deals eevn my seagate lovin arse couldn't pass up) and I've never had any troubles with them. I work all of them very hard often downloading well over 400gb each month, burning to disk, then repeating the next month and they continue to perform extremely well. I've had both Maxtor and WD drives go bad on me and lose data that took months to re-find/recreate so I tend to stay away from them. While i do still keep my data backed up, I don't backup as often as I should because I trust seagate drives much more than any other brand of HD.

that being said, this is a nice deal, I just wish i wasn't broke :(

Are the these quiet. Firs ti here they are fast and quiet then jsut fast then slow and loud.
If any one has one let me know if they are actually as quiet as the Samsung or the old Seagates.

I have two of those WD WD5000AAKS drives. They are the most quiet hard drives I've ever owned. I run a water cooled rig which is extremely quiet and there is absolutely no whine or grinding sound from either of these drives. I pummel the crud out of my hardware, and I'm considering getting a third drive for ultra redundancy, but I'll tell you that those WD drives I have are crazy quiet.

If you need HDD info, check out http://www.storagereview.com/

I don't know if they're unbiased, but the info I got on the WD drives was very accurate and helpful.

Good luck everyone.

EDIT:

PS: If you are interested in quiet components, quietpc.com has some recommended components. They sell the WD 5000 drives there, but you can get them elsewhere. I find it nice that a place that specializes in quiet computer components also recommends these drives.

First-hand experience:

I ordered one early Wednesday morning, received it on Wednesday morning even with standard two-day shipping. The UPS guy ****** tossed the package on my front doorstep and took off (I was watching this through a nearby window). This isn't exactly a good neighborhood to toss things off on a front doorstep.

My particular drive was made in Thailand, not China or Singapore. It's a bit loud, but my 150GB Raptor tends to drown it out. I can still hear it; the sound it makes is arguably more annoying, a weird "grinding" noise. It seems to be quite fast. The grinding noise kills it for me.

Looking more and more like this one's going back, sadly.
