I'm running 2x PATA drives, non-raid and I'm wondering if I switch over to SATA 3gb/s RAID, would I see a big performance boost?

The bigger the RAID array you utilize, the bigger performance boost you'll see. For example, a RAID5 array would be substantially faster if it's on SATA 3g vs PATA.

Word around is that some Maxtor SATA drives exhabits compatibility issues with nVidia NForce 4 based motherboards. Best to double check before buying into one (or more.)

This is TRUE. I know from personal experience. Maxtor claims that a new firmware will fix the problem, but data corruption is also a REAL POSSIBILITY with the Nforce4 chipset, large files, and Maxtor SATA drives.
