500GB hard drive in a older gen Macbook?

I am not aware of any limitation that might exist that would prevent you from putting that in there. You just have to make sure that you get one that is only 9.5mm tall, some of the early 500GB drives were thicker than that, so you have to make sure of that. Past that you should be just fine.
