$500 to spend...what digital camera to buy?

My sister's boyfriend wants to get her a digital camera for Xmas, and he wants to spend $500 (give or take $50) on the thing.

I dont know what would be good in the everyday camera area, I have a Canon G5, and if i were to buy a new one, i would go with the G6 or a Nikon D70, but those are not what he wants. She isnt entireley PC saavy, so he is really looking for something easy..

I was thinking of one of these:

Canon Powershot S60
Canon S1-IS
Sony DSC-V1
Fuji Finepix E550
Nikon Coolpix 5400

This of course would be with accessories, like a 512 stick of memoery and camera bag or whatever...

help! 🙂

I have the Sony DSC-V1 and I LOVE it, great little camera, great for point and shoot and tons of other features if he ever wants to use them, I will glad to send you a 5MP pic or two of mine

I've been looking at the Nikon Coolpix 5400... Probably not entirely n00b friendly, but close enough. The Nikon View software should be easy enough to use, as well.

how about a camera less than $500 camera that is easy to carry (not like the body of nikon D70 or Canon digital rebels) but at the same time, takes great pics of whatever I point and shoot at?

I'm in the market for a new camera as well, I'll be using mine mostly when I travel or visit places or sporting events... not really pics of friends or social events. Any ideas? I want a camera with a small body, I don't want to carry one of those bigger cameras around tied around my neck

More random samples. Full diagnostic images here.

For any of the more popular makes and models of cameras, merely use the search function at Pbase. Likewise, for diagnostic images to make comparisons between models, select "Reviews" from this manufacturer page. As for the best recommendation, depends greatly on how the term "everyday" is intended. The types of shots (landscape/scenic//vacation, portrait/group shots, indoor v outdoor, etc) can vary a great deal in the vagary of how "everyday" is defined; and certainly it can be quite different from end-user to end-user. Many P&S cameras perform many types of shots, while others specialize a bit more in one or two types. That said, is difficult to go wrong with any of the later PowerShot models as a starter digital - the A Series, most notably.

Good luck.

how is the battery life on that?

I used to have a small canon camera about the size of a credit card but the battery life sucked... so it has become a real important factor for me when choosing a digicam

MINE! 🙂 (see sig)

Heh, it is likely not what you're looking for....

I'm looking at the S1-IS right now to replace my A75.
