Hi, I would like to know everyone's ideas on building my brother a new computer. He is on a budget of around $500-600 for just the computer. No monitor, speakers, etc. I was thinking of building a duron system. He will be using it for internet, light gaming, mp3's, Audio mixxing,& word. What do you guys think would be good? I was gonna get the stuff at Monarchcomputer.com or compuplus.com

For budget gaming, Duron is a good choice.

Get your favorite KT133A motherboard and a GeForce2 MX video card, you'll be happy with the result.

You definitely should be able to build a nice box for that price I've put together these prices from my local shop, I'm going to put together a machine for my dad. I used to be a Celery guy but I don't know how not to build a Duron system for their prices and performance. here's what i came up with right around $500.

DURON 700 $63
Abit KT7 $150
128mb Kingston PC133 RAM $50
8MB TNT2 Vanta $30
20BG Maxtor $80
50x CD-ROM $50
Floppy drive $15
generic ATX case 300 watt PS $55
Sound Blaster PCI 128 $37
add another $50 or so for keyboard and mouse
