I don't think much has changed. Outlook still sucks, and is almost completely useless. Some groups may be so large that old news readers might have problems with them. Rar is the popular format, get Z-zip. And the latest news is yenc, which came out 8 years ago.
 
Astraweb rocks! Been with them for about 4-5 months now. Never a problem. Love
the free SSL and the great retention. NZB's are the way to go. But if you pull down
headers they support header compression with news readers that support it, like
Newsbin Pro.........
 
I used thundernews before and it met my needs. I moved on and tried giganews. 50 off thundernews looks attractive. What do you think giganews, thundernews or astorweb?

Also as someone else has posted GrabIt from Shemes.. will mostly check/unpack everything for you so winRAR or similar isn't necessary.

I signed up for Thundernews on 5/20/09. Got the USA no SSL 8 connections and it works as flawlessly as my Giganews for downloading with 10 connection. With the 50% promotion it came to 9.95/month. Well bye bye Giganews at 24.95/mo. It is pretty much constant with my ISP speed which is ATT DSL 6.0. I use newsbin as my news reader. I am not sure why, I have noticed since I started with this new service My DL speed has been 7.0. The same thing when I switch server to Giganews. It was always a constant 5.8-6.2 before the 7.0. NOT COMPLAINING AT&T love the faster speed. I would have to say try it for a month and see how it goes for you!

Thanks. I went with this deal. Sometimes it's not about the retention. Sometimes it's about the completion rate. I was a Giganews subscriber for a long time, then switched to Newsdemon for the cheaper deal, but regretted it shortly after.

I'm sure Thundernews is just fine, but Astraweb for the same price is the better deal.

I second GrabIt, I've used it for years now and I haven't had any problems with it, and it's free!
 
I signed up. I have been using Powerusenet for the last year and half but this deal is half the price and I have been getting the same speeds as Powerusenet.

As far as readers I like Newsleecher. Super search works great.

They give you a free version of News Rover with your account at Thundernews too. Not going to use it but just thought I would mention it.

Well been with Thundernews for 2 days; started off great with a 16Mbp/sec rate.

Today it seems to be capped at 2Mbp/Sec.
If I switch back to my Newshosting settings then I can get 16Mbp/sec again.

If I change the port, then I get 16Mbp/Sec for around 5 minutes. Something is definitely throttling the connection. Can't rule out my ISP, but either way it makes no difference since Newshosting doesn't have an an issue in this area (been with them for 2 years).

Couldn't obtain any support, so in the process of signing up for AstraWeb and will ask Thundernews for a refund for their unlimited/unthrottled plan.

At this point I would not recommend the deal; at least it is not working for me.
 
End of 2008 Time Warner dropped usenet service, but it was pretty lousy anyway with less than a week retention.

For non binary usenet access Google (groups) works fine and is free to use via web interface.

For the net history challenged, usenet was what everybody used prior to web forums. There are something like 50,000 different interest groups all in a massive hierarchy of rec.games.rpg.wow type names (recreation, games, rpg, World of Warcraft, etc.). Messages are simple ASCII text with a fixed maximum length, and it worked great for a LONG time. Then somebody got the bright idea of converting a binary file into a series of linked text messages. This grew over time and now for a binary file of a DVD you might download 200k related text messages and various tools assemble them into an ISO to burn a DVD from.

Retention is how many days posted information stays on a given server. 30 days used to be common for non binary groups, binary groups with thousands of times more messages per day could be as little as a few days or a week. This was in the day of most Usenet servers running on spare machines at colleges etc. When the commercial providers showed up, the two things they offered for pay were greater speeds and more days of retention.

Generally how things work now people use special applications to access Usenet, and the application will keep track of all activity on the server, look for keyword content and only down load those files, down load all message header title info, down load all new info, etc.

Astraweb and the pay by the gig thing looks pretty good to me.

Well, having it running on WHS since its always on, and SABnzbd+ will take things from RSS and automatically download/decompress/par check. It also auto sorts the downloaded TV shows into Shows & Seasons. I personally have it download to pooled drive (D) and then have it moved to networked Video drive which is shared throughout my network so I have access to any show it downloads without any extra work.

I bit for $25/120 GB from Astraweb, my hard drive is already complaining about lack of space. Nice to have usenet back, and now I have some fresh Theater Organ music to listen to.
